5 stone or 7 stone band, which is better...

...for finger coverage? If I get the 5 stone band, the diamonds are a little bigger, but there are obviously only 5 diamonds. If I get the 7 stone, there are *more* diamonds, but the diamonds are a little smaller than the 5 stone. What sounds blingier? I am a size 6.5 if that makes a difference. I am hoping to have the band go all the way across the top of my finger. Thanks for indulging me. :rodent:

What size stones were you thinking of? I actually tried on both a 5 and 7 stone ring today. The 5 stone had .25 ct stones and the 7 stone was smaller. Both rings were Memoire. I have to say, I was disappointed by the 5 stone- it wasn't nearly as much finger coverage as I would've thought and my right hand can wear a 3.75. If the ring size had been smaller, that might have helped make the stones span more finger. But interestingly enough, the jeweler thought the smaller 7 stone ring looked better on me.

You can have finger coverage with any number of stones. But the larger stones of a 5 stone are going to be more blingy as a standalone ring than a 7 stone ring of the same weight.

I wear a size 6.5 and if I was only going to have a single row of diamonds, if they would be only .25 or .30 ct, I would want 7 stones. That is how many it would take to cover the top of my hand. With a five stone, I would want .45ct stones at least.

Or a band like my Aurora 8)

Hi Logan Sapphire! Probably .25 or .35 stones. I think .25s will be too small for a 5 stone to cover the top of the finger though, like Dreamer said.

What's your budget?
Are you going to wear the diamond band alone or with another ring?

When I went to my local jeweller to buy my diamond band, I tried both 5 stones band and 7 stones band:I could choose between 20 pointers, 15 pointers and 10 pointers... I bought a 7 stones band with 10 pointers because:
five 15 pointers didn't cover the half top of my finger;
the size difference between 15 pointers and 10 pointers wasn't worth the price jump IMHO;
five 20 pointers didn't cover the half top of my finger;
on my finger, seven 10 pointers looked better than five 20 pointers.

Here's the 7 stones band thread (my ring size is 6):

Yeah, I agree. I thought .25s were too small for full finger coverage in a 5 stone :((

I wear a 6.5 and have a five stone with 2.14ctw, .40 range and it is perfect finger coverage for me.

I tired on a bazillion... I'm am also a 6.5. I found 1.7- 2.0 tctw was the best. I picked .34-.35 for mine. It's being made now. So I should have pictures in the next week or so... I recommend trying them on... It surprised me what I liked and what I didn't care for. I was very certain I didn't want the stones between my fingers. Definitely a personal preference.

I have a band with five 0.19 stones that is a size 6 and the diamonds cover the entire top of my finger. It is substantial enough to wear alone and really packs a punch.

Hmm, so it must really depend on the band and maybe the finger shape? Any pics, Dana? :naughty:

Hi purplesilk, I'll be wearing it with my engagement ring and spacer.

Oh wow, this makes all the difference in the world! My answer is totally different for a standalone ring than it is for a wedding band to wear with an e-ring. I personally think a large 5 stone takes away from the e-ring and can look a little overdone.

I would absolutely choose smaller stones in a 7 or 9 stone band to wear with an e-ring. Which ring are you buying this to wear with? The halo solitaire?

If you're going to wear it with your e-ring and a spacer, I think you should go with 9 five pointers or 7 ten pointers.
Some people may suggest going with 2 or 3 pointers...I just say no, because I also have a 3 pointers channel set band and I don't like how it looks on my size 6 finger: it's dull even paired with my 0.30 rose cut antique solitaire...judge it by yourself:

Hehe, I don't mind DS. I want a BIG BLING look, so even if it totally overwhelms my e-ring, that's okay with me! I want people to see this band from across the room! :naughty: I'll be wearing it with my original 1 carat e-ring.

This is Gemgirl's gorgeous new set--I would like to duplicate this look, but go even bigger with the band. She mentioned that her band is a 9 stone x 0.085 pointers. So maybe I could do something like 7 x 0.20 pointers.

Well, I hate to say it, but I don't think big stones on a wedding band look good at all with a 1 ct. diamond. It just makes the 1 ct. diamond look small. I wouldn't wear more than 5-8 pointers with a 1 ct. stone. My 10+ point stones are about all my 1.6 can handle. I think to go to 15 pts. or more, a 2 ct. e-ring is best. As an example, sna's wife has a 2.3 ct. diamond and her band has around 15 point stones:

The other issue that will make it hard to do is that unless you set that 1 ct. stone really high, a larger diamond band is definitely going to hit the prongs of the e-ring. You'd likely need a spacer that is wide enough to keep them from touching. I think the height issue is one thing that makes it not work well to wear a large diamond band with a smaller solitaire. Even sna's wife is probably going to have to use a spacer because the height of her 15 pt stones hits the prongs of her e-ring.

BUT, I realize that this ring is for YOU, and you should get whatever you want! I'm just stating the potential problems so you'll be fully aware! :))

Laila, have you tried on rings with stones that large next to your e-ring?

Not yet MrsS. Am I going to be in for a surprise?

I don't know that you'd be in for a surprise but i was just in Tiffany's a couple of weeks ago to look at eternitys so I could get a good idea for size. I tried on a full eternity made up of .15's with a 1.5 carat solitaire and I thought it made the solitaire look small :eek: and i wear a size 3.5 so a 1.5 carat round usually is huge to me. The sales gal then pulled out a 2 carat round it it looked way more proportionate to me. I think it's totally a personal presence thing but would suggest you at least try a band on with the stones you are wanting with your e-ring to make sure you like how it looks.

I think it depends in what you like-
