Hello,

I recently upgraded my earring diamonds to .57ct each, and now I need to finalise the settings. I'm vacillating between a 5-prong, or 6-prong, made more difficult by the lack of 5-prong pictures I can find. Does anyone have a 5-prong setting they could share?

It seems there are plenty of 4 and 6-prong settings, but 5 isn't as popular. Can anyone shed light on why that would be?

Thanks so much!

Maybe someone could photoshop or cad some examples for you. I like asymmetrical just about everything so I think it might look cool! But I’d needs lots of imagines so I could get a good feel for it.

@Tourmaline, that makes sense, thanks!

@Alybetter, I agree with wanting lots of images. I just can't find many.

Here is a cad image my jeweller did to show what it could look like.

I think they can be really pretty! As an example, Kataoka‘s Snowflake Studs use a 5-prong motif as a design element, which is echoed in the settings for the smaller surrounding stones.

Thanks for sharing those Kataoka earrings, @MiniMinerva. They are so beautiful.

And thank you so much for finding that picture, @Rfisher! That's exactly what I wanted to see.

I am still very undecided. For the size of the diamonds, I feel 6 prongs may be too many, so that's why I wanted to consider 5. I know that, once they're on, the number of prongs will probably not be discernible to anyone, including me. But I will agonise over this decision anyway

If you are concerned that 6 will be too many, 4 is always a great option.

I think 5 prongs is a beautiful, unique look.

I don’t love the five. I’ll be honest. And I have studs with nine - I’m not opposed to asymmetry by any means.

I think it works in Kataoka’s pieces because the five-sided shape created by five prongs is extended into the surrounding stones. It’s a very *deliberate* five prong shape, deliberately unexpected, if that makes any sense?

Whereas five prongs that don’t flow into other design elements just looks like... Five prongs, which is just an odd number that people don’t expect (and is a small enough number that people will actually notice... the fact that mine have nine just kind of gets lost in the “oh, lots of prongs”)

I would do six, personally.

Absolutely agreed! Additionally, the Kataoka earrings above showcase hazy rose-cut stones, so the alignment of faceting and prongs do not appear to be in stark contrast.

As a side note, I wonder if these pieces might be designed to evoke the five-petaled sakura flower (cherry blossom), even though they were named “Snowflake Studs” — I believe natural snowflakes have six branches due to the hexagonal arrangement of water molecules in ice!

I do have a 1.04ct solitaire ring in 5-prong (non-custom) bought decades ago. Only realised years later that I am not a fan of it. My 2tcw studs used to be in 5-prong too but since been reset into classic 4-prong as I like it more symmetrical & look better with earring jackets.

Thank you so much to everyone who chimed in!

@lucida818, thank you so much for sharing your ring picture. It's great to have a picture of a 5-prong to see what it would look like, and will hopefully help others too.

@yssie, I agree that Kataoka's earrings work because of the additional stones.

@Lookinagain, thank you for reminding me of Mrs-B's studs. They are similar in size, and illustrate perfectly how my stones will look in 6-prongs. 6 it is!

So you decided on 6?

I am actually loving 5 prongs and was just curious if you are still set on 6!

I’ve seen quite a few rings from asian vendors, especially emulating “Sakura” or star motifs
