Hello all,
I have always loved loved loved the step cut and I have an opportunity to buy a 5 carat emerald but I really would love to get some thoughts and feed back from all the knowledgeable pricescopers here
I have tried to watch as many youtube videos and research everything I can find on the internet but I am still have no where near have the expertise I need to make an educated decision on such a large purchase. I would be purchasing from my good friends long time good friend.
Here are the specs from two certs:
Gia Cert dated 5/13
Emerald Cut, 5.01 carats, J, SI1 (eye clean), 10.9x8.37x6.04, polish VG, symmetry G, fluorescence SB, table 66%, depth 72.1 %, culet very small, girdle very thin-extremely thick
EGL USA dated 9/13
Emerald Step, 5.01 carats, H, VS2, 10.88x8.36x6.04, polish VG, symmetry excelent, fluorescence faint, table 64%, depth 72.2%, culet very small, girdle thin to medium polished, crown 13.2%, pavilion 56.3%
it comes already mounted on a simple plat prong basket setting on a simple band. I have not seen it in person yet but I will be able to next week if I choose to.
$48K
here are my questions:
1) I know that Gia has higher standards than EGL but there is such a large discrepancy on color, fluorescence, symmetry that I wonder if I should worry about it. I am most concerned about the symmetry and fluorescence being so off from each other. Also I cant find pavilion or crown on the GIA cert. Does gia not give those measurements?
2) From my research I know that 72.2% depth is way too deep. Does this only affect how large the stone looks from face up? Or does that kind of depth also affect the face up brilliance, scintillation, fire of the stone?
3) I originally did not want anything lower than an I color but from my research I have learned that a J with SB fluorescence will help the color look at least one color grade higher. I know there is a lot of debate on the fluorescence issue but what are your thoughts on the specs of this stone as it relates to fluorescence?
4) I have the option of buying the stone sans setting for a little bit more of a discount but I don't mind the setting. If I buy with setting should I be concerned that I have not seen the stone outside of setting? Is there anything about the stone that could be hidden by the setting?
5) And lastly but certainly not least, I am suppose to be getting a very good price for this stone. Please let me know if it is in fact a good price as I know SI1 J strong blue fluorescence and 72.1% depth is probably not terrible but certainly not top of the line either.
Thank you to anyone who responds with answers, thought or info. I really could use it!
