Plus, I know I rushed him on that miligrain, and I''d rather go with something I know he can do well, which is fluid, smooth, metal bezels.![]()
Whitby, you're not making it any easier, dear.Date: 7/27/2009 10:40:17 AM

hi lauren
i really wouldn't do a smooth bezel which says 'modern' to me.
i can definitely see the pros and cons in going either way - leaving it as is or redoing it with a more subtle milgrain. altho a fairly thick milgrain, it actually gives it a slight 'star burst' effect, a common design motif from the deco period, so perhaps that accounts for the more positive imagine in my head when i look at it as is.
like a lot of things, i'd suggest you just live with it for a bit and see if it grows on you. if it doesn't, send it out to be done in a more delicate style. but you might grow to love it. the problem might not be that you dislike it as it is -but rather that it's jarring with the image you HAD in your head as to how it would look. i'd give 'the way it turned out' a chance to take hold, and if it doesn't, change then.
but i quite like that very obviously 'hand done' look and the effect which, to me, is more like sun rays than milgrain. in deco design it was a common motif to express new life and it was a very popular image among artisans in australia around that period to represent australia's federation, which occurred in 1901 - ergo right at the forefront of that design period. the image was also used in europe for various cultural and political reasons, and occurs in many designs of that age group.
anyway, just a thought. i vote 'give it a chance then re-think'
