$450 to set a diamond?

With the help of these boards...I''ve found a great diamond and a great setting. The place I''m buying the setting from wants to charge me $250 per ct. to set my diamond (total of $450). I''ve seen 1.8ct Asschers in the setting already and the setting basically fits my girlfriend...so not a lot of custom work needs to be done.

Does that price sound right?

I think the most I''ve ever heard of was $100. I think you''re being ripped off.

many places i''ve called charge $1 per point and some charge $1 per point up to 1 carat, then $1.50 for each point afte that. Still your price is higher.

Since it sounds like they didn''t sell you the stone, they may be trying to cover costs if a problem develops in setting...some places won''t touch setting diamonds not purchased in house due to the liability...can''t really blame them, but it is inconvenient.

Sounds like maybe they''re sticking it to you because you didn''t get the stone there..

Does anybody else carry (or can get) this setting? If so, tell them you''ll pay x amount, or go elsewhere.

Ditto-that''s ridiculous! Wow! I''d take my business elsewhere, personally.

That does seem awfully high unless there's something very unusual about this job and they surely know this but before we call them completely out of line, ask a few specific questions.

Is there any modification required to the mounting to make it accept the new diamond? If so, specifically what is required?

In the unlikely case where they break or damage the stone during the setting process, will they pay for it? Do they feel that the risk for this is unduly high for your particular diamond in this particular setting?

And one question for you (already asked by Ellen). Who makes this setting and can you get it elsewhere?

Wow! I have never paid more than $50 to have a stone set.

Once again i am in agreement with the denver appraiser....450 is alot to pay for just setting the stone...dollar a point is more in line and what any of the stores i have worked at charges for setting fees.Are they including the new crown in this quote or is that extra?Good luck with your ring.

I definately had a bit of sticker shock...$450.00?!?!?!?!...but, after truly thinking about it...I am wondering if the large price also including the prong head, or just the setting of the stone. I would comparision shop, and if push comes to shove...purchase the setting and take it elsewhere to be set.

Be an informed buyer...bottom line.

That price implies they prefer to not set the diamond. Going elsewhere sounds very tempting. I never like using a vendor or provider who I believe prefers not have my business. A mutual feeling of fairness and cooperation need to exist before business and money change hands.
