40th birthday project

I have a very special 40th birthday project in the works. For the past 15 years I have loved the purple/blue colour of tanzanite but know it is a no go for a daily ring. My attention has then being to find this colour in a sapphire. Of course, I also managed to want a very difficult shape to find in a sapphire: a pear. I have been trying to source one with the right shape, colour, size, and price for a few years now to no avail!! Well…with my 40th birthday coming up in the middle of the year I decided it was now or never.

This year I asked Jeff White to try and source something from the Touscon gem show. I love the size of @Neptune’s emerald pear, and knew I was looking for a chubby pear with a length dimension of between 13.5mm - 14mm. Ultimately I ended up with a stone which was slightly smaller than I had hoped (12.5 x 8.6 x 6) but which otherwise fit my parameters.

I am now in the process of ring design.

I actually wanted Jeff to cut me a pear from rough but he said there was no chance of finding rough of sufficient size for the finished dimensions that I wanted.

I don’t try and ask for impossible/super expensive things….I just somehow have a knack for doing so

My handmade platinum ring has now been completed by Alistair Kelsey. Alistair kindly sent me some photos (below). He has been great to work with. I will be picking the ring up soon; very excited.

I am delighted with the finished product. Alistair did such a great job and was so easy to work with. One of my favourite aspects of this ring is that there is no middle rail and you can see the belly of the sapphire from the back and side.
