Sorry if this starts a duplicate thread, but here goes...

I am looking to "upgrade" my wife's engagement ring to a three stone ring using the original as one of the side stones and getting a new center stone and a new second side stone.

Any advice would be appreciated, specifically thoughts on the ratio of stones; I have read between 2:1 and 3:1 but that makes for a very large center stone as the original was a 1.47ct, G, VVS2 princess cut stone.

Thanks!

That would be rather large!!!!

How about turning the 1.47ct into a pendant and starting fresh with a 3 stone?

I don't think that will work either. Ladies here who have had large three stone rings basically used a 3 ct center with sides of half carat to one carat each (but they were rounds). I think a 1.47 ct stone is too large for a side stone. I agree with making that one into a pendant and starting over with the ring. Maybe do a three stone with rounds?

Use the 1.47 as the center and add .50 sides?

...or 2 x .70/.80 sides. That would be a gorgeous statement ring and quite the upgrade! That puts you in the area of a 2:1 ratio.
