Morning everyone. Had to tell you all how we spent 3 hrs with the gemologist of the store we are seriously considering having our rings designed at. We went in to look at asschers and emerald cuts and they had none to show us. They asked their gemologist to come out and give us more info on them and how he would go about getting some in for us to look at ect.
He was so excited about all the questions we had for him and the knowledge We already knew...(all learned on pricescope thank you all very much) that he took us into his office and showed us all sorts of diamonds. From a 5 ct perfect round to a match set of rare Paraiba tourmalines. They refuse to sell them separately. They will only sell them as a set. Kind of like his babies.
We learned about fluorescence in diamonds and saw it first hand under black light. He told us about the history of platinum and how it was used in Military and could not be used by none military. Than when the government declassified it...jewelry makers especially were thrilled to be able to use it.We talked about palladium and how they are using it more and more and he feels it will eventually out sell white gold.Than get more expensive of coarse because it will be more in demand. They do a lot in palladium. His opinion of coarse. They do a huge custom piece business and everything is done in house. there is nothing they need to send a piece out for. We learned so much and it was so exciting . he kept saying. You guys are asking such great questions and on and on he went.
Anyway I just thought I would share that. There is more but it would take to long to write it all down here and I am sure I would bore everyone. These are the highlights though...I feel really lucky. there are so many people shopping for diamonds and getting such bad advice from people that are suppose to know what they are doing. He told us about a couple that came in and were told by someone in the business that the bow tie effect in a marquis was good. He has heard it all as well. One last thing....you will all be happy to know the very last thing he told us was this. If you remember nothing else today remember this. The most important piece of info to always remember when buying a diamond is CUT CUT CUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)Not once during all of this did he try to sell us anything. it was all for our information to use going forward...

SOunds like you had a great opportunity and took advantage of it. It will lessen the confusion, but one does not master the diamond business in 3 hours, 3 weeks or 30 years. It gets better over time, but good advice always make things easier.

With some knowledge combined with good advice you will know the right stone when you see it. Then, the question will be, can you afford the stone that is the right one? I sure hope it all comes together for you.

Awwwwwwwwww if money were no object. I would have my stone already. Several actually. There were lots to fall in love with while visiting with him. The gemologist did make certain to say that no matter how long he has been in the business. Mastering it will not happen. No two stones are ever alike and learning something new or seeing something different is always a given.

Yes we certainly took advantage of our time with him. Learned a ton...and have a better understanding of the whole process.

It was wonderful.

lauralu, sounds wonderful! what a change from having ill-informed SA''s trying to tell customers they don''t know anything, or trying to belittle what we have learned. Sounds like you had a great time and that that shop certainly earned a customer that day.

Let us know what happens!

I say do your best to buy from him! if at all reasonable to do so

Just wanted to add that I''m seeing and meeting more and more passionate GG''s that are working in
family owned independent jewelry stores in my area. It''s great to see. There are many
fine highly educated folks in retail stores who are happy to share their knowledge with you. You were
lucky to find someone that truly cares. It''s becoming a true necessity to have well trained people on staff.
Slick salespeople and pressure tactics just won''t cut it down the road.

I''m glad that you had a good experience!!!

That''s fantastic! I''d love to be able to do that as well. I have a thousand questions and would love a similar experience.

Yes Jeff, there are many fine people working in th Mall stores willing to help and be of service. Like any profession. There are always the people who are in it for themselves. educating ourselves is key in anything we do to help us make informed decisions.

I do hope he can find us a diamond that we love and in our price range. I would certianly be willing to pay more for it just because I would be able to see it personally before I buy. Also because of the great service we are receiving from him. How much? Not more than 5 to 700 over internet. So far what I have seen and came back to find similar online he has been not to far off.

So our latest quest is finding a diamond that has beautiful blue florescence to it. I am learning what color and florescence combo would be most beautiful and not over 6000 (which has been upped from 500 to 6). Of coarse size matters as well.

The journey continues....

lauralu,

Are you located in the twin cities area? Can you tell me which gemologist you are working with? I am also in the midst of ring shopping. If you don''t want to post it in the forum, you can e-mail me. It is my screen name at yahoo.com.
