Ooooooooo! That''s beautiful! What plans do you have for a setting?

DG,

That looks like one awesome stone. I love antique cuts too. Have fun at Martin Fuller''s. He such a nice guy and so knowledgeable.

Congrats on the great find!!!

Awwww.... thanks for the kind words everyone!

I was up half the night looking at the stone - moving from one room to another to look at it in different types of lighting. Is anyone else as crazy as me? My husband thinks my pet rock needs a name!

For a setting, I''ve gotten intial quotes from Pete at Quest and also Leon Mege.

We''re meeting with Pete after the appraisal on Saturday (I''m in DC). I''m going for a thin shank with a single-row of pave and a basket setting. I considered a halo, but I think it would be too much for me. I''ve always liked the basket on these Leon Mege earrings, and he told me that it would work for a ring. The sides of the basket would be more angled than in the earrings.

I''m also thinking about setting it E-W, but I''m not sure. What do you guys think?

I can''t wait to see what you decide to pick! I really like that Mege basket, it would look lovely with pave on the shank.

Maybe some of the gals with photoshop can help you get a better idea of what this could look like.

It''s a TREASURE

I can imagine you are having so much fun playing with it!

What a beautiful stone! So romantic and old world feeling! I hope it checks out and can''t wait to see what you do with it afterwards!!

Muah!

Well, the earring settings are a vintage style, as much as the stone is - so befitting! The ring should turn out quite a charmer.

As a side note

this type of basket setting is a bit of a celebrity - it is what the current Tiffany solitaire 'evolved' from. Their already notorious rings looked precisely like that around 1910-20. As long as the rings were fabricated, this more airy, opened version of six prong basket must have been handier to make - but this is just a hunch - the 'trend' may have no logic whatsoever.

Seriously.... the diamond is super endearing. No wonder you lost sleep! Hope Quest makes short work of this project, otherwise I might too

I''m so jealous right now I could jump on the next plane and snatch that thing out of your hand! It''s gorgeous!!!!!!!! Since you''re in DC I guess Quest would be a good place to go, but Ari actually made my sister''s ring so that''s an option as well.

And I love the E-W idea. My (much smaller) OMC is more square than yours, but I ended up setting it E-W and really liked the way it looked.

I can''t wait to see the final thing. (Love the prong idea too!)

oh wow, it''s simply stunning. The setting sounds divine too. Can''t wait to see what you decide.

After months and months of searching, I think I may have found my stone. It arrived via Fed-Ex this morning and I have done nothing but play with it at my desk all day! :) It is a 3.08 antique cushion circa 1890-1910. It has the classic chunky facets, open culet, high crown angles, and a somewhat irregular outline. Not everyone''s cup of tea and I''m sure that the specs on paper are not going to be impressive, but it has a lot of personality :)
Tiger... what were the length and width of your stone? I really love it :)

Congratulations on your purchase! I love the way you are planning to set it too, perfect for an antique stone. I can''t wait to see the pictures of a finished project. Congrats again.

kcourselle, cehra bumped an old thread of tigers...i think he already posted pictures of the ring, leon mege did it i think??

oh yes the pics are definitely posted and the ring is gorgeous!! I just couldn''t find anything on the ratio of that stone so I was curious the dimensions :)

Thanks guys,

Oh my, it''s gorgeous!! I should have looked at the dates of the post. I love the ring though, WOW!! Something kind of made me think...have I seen this before?
