Hi PS community!

I am not sure I need PS or a therapist, lol! My upgrade ring will be here this week and I have so many mixed thoughts. I haven’t even seen it and I already know it’s not right.

The backstory – I found PS a couple of days after I made the purchase. I have now lurked about for a month and am getting crazily obsessive. Not sure knowing this much or seeing all the jewelry on here is helping me! I do think that everyone on here seems so helpful and nice though and I have enjoyed learning. So I lucked out on the diamond and I think it will be perfect considering priorities and budget. It is not a super ideal cut but does have a 1.8 HCA and falls in the FIC range. It is within the white border for AGS0. The only drawback that I can see is that it is 8.6mm instead of the more common 8.8mm for a 2.5 carat which is not a big deal for me. When I began my search, I found Whiteflash online and wanted a diamond from there since their showroom is about 10 minutes from my house but decided that the sales tax would eat too much of my budget. The setting (a 3 row pave band with a very detailed pave collar), however, is giving me anxiety. The setting is the reason I bought from blue nile. I thought I wanted total pave and I do find it beautiful. But I am worried that it will end up being a big pain and it will just be too much (style and maintenance) for daily life. Unfortunately, it is a special order and not returnable. And it wasn’t cheap! I have the following options:

1. Try to live with the pave until stones start falling out.

2. Have it reset in a simple solitaire from Whiteflash. I could actually see the settings instead of just looking at pictures. The pave setting would then just be stored away. Save for later, save for kids, or try to sell? If I even could sell it I know there would be a significant loss but would it be better than just sitting in a safe for quite a few years (maybe forever)?

3. Have it set in the CvB Dahlia. Wow I love it! It is elegant yet simple enough for every day. I of course would want a band then too! I am looking at another $6K when I have an almost $5K pave setting stored! Have I lost my mind? We have the money but convincing my husband to spend it on jewelry is another story altogether!

I am hoping y’all can help me out. Suggestions and advice are really needed. I know I am getting ahead of myself here but I have wanted for this ring for a while now. I want it to be right!

The main thing I need to keep telling myself is that this is such a 1st world problem and it will be ok!

Since you've got the money invested in the setting, wear it and love it! If and when it starts to get beat up, you may have a totally different idea for what kind of setting you want. If you spend enough time on PS, you will change your mind a million times in 2 years ;)

Wait and get it. Can you link to the setting? (I would love to see it since I am having my BN asscher reset by Caysie van Bebber into split shank pave)...

I have had very good luck with Blue Nile.

It is actually the cover setting on blue nile right now which I find a little embarrassing.

Really pretty. Just sit tight and wait for it... you can always sell it on loupe troop.

Wait until you see it, you liked it enough to buy it and once you see it in person you might really love it. Once it's on your finger you might fall in love with it. There's a big difference between looking at a pic and seeing it in person. PS can be both a blessing and a curse lol - so many options presented here that it can easily lead to second-guessing. As whitewave said, selling it is an option too. Try not to worry!

Thanks. It's just a ring, right? Nothing that can't be fixed. Gosh, I feel like a crazy person for obsessing this much.

If you stick around here, you'll really turn into a crazy person...like us!!!:twirl::lol:

I think it looks pretty. I hope you can use it and love it. But I, too, am partial to about everything Caysie makes, so I feel your pain. My problem is that I can't narrow it down to ONE setting!!!

Your diamond should be returnable, though, so let us see the specs. We can maybe help you exchange for a better one.

Lol here are the specs for the diamond. It's the one thing I am really not too worried about! I don't have a keen eye and I often can't even see the difference between good and bad - unless it's really bad.

Thanks for taking a look!

Just wear it for a while...you may either find out that you really like it after all or that you want something a little different.

If you dont end up using it for your engagement ring, it would be lovely with a colored stone in it as a RHR.

Please post pics when you get it...maybe after all the oohs and aahs you'll feel better about it.

Well, the main issue is if you ever decided you wanted a different diamond, a really great cut one is easier to sell. It has a couple of issues, as you already mentioned, it is deep so it makes the stone face up smaller than it should. The crown angle is high, but it must work out with the greater depth if the HCA says 1.8. It's not bad by any means, but you could get one that is even better if you want to go to the trouble. I would do it solely because of BN's relatively restrictive upgrade policy. I wouldn't want to change my mind later and be stuck. But I've been around here so long that I am probably too picky!

These are measurements to help you stay in ideal cut territory with a GIA excellent cut stone.

table: 54-58

depth: 60-62.3

crown angle: 34-35.0 (up to 35.5 crown angle can sometimes work with a 40.6 pav angle)

pavilion angle: 40.6-40.9 (sometimes 41.0 if the crown angle is close to 34)

At the end of the day the diamond is the most expensive bit of the ring. You may love the setting when you see it but if you really don't a simpler setting wouldn't be too pricey. I love my ring but look on here and think what if I had a halo, or a split shank, or set lower/higher!! Haha I think many of us do the same.

Oh yes, please post pics when you get it!

Thanks diamondseeker and everyone else! I do like that it is an FIC diamond - maybe only because they are a rare cut? I looked at so many stones and plugged the numbers into the calculator and didn't find another one. I also read they are about 1/2000 on a thread I found here by Mr. Holloway. So when I saw that, I decided I wanted it. I also read that they are "top heavy" and desirable to some (but definitely not all). Also I got a decent price as far as I can tell. I haven't found a stone for $22K that seems better to me.

Plus I live in Texas so whiteflash and brian gavin are out due to sales tax. Another $2k would get me a CvB band!!!

That's a really good price. You are getting a discount relative to an ideal cut because those will just sell for more. So when you see it, you'll know if you love it. If you do, then I wouldn't give it another thought!

:appl:Yay I did something right!!! Plus if (big huge if) I ever want to sell maybe someone will be looking for a nice FIC. I doubt I will ever upgrade again though. 2.5 carat is probably as big as I will want or need.

taytay - I have definitely thought about a sapphire for the ring!!! OUT OF CONTROL here in Texas!!!

Isn't a popular strategy to avoid the imposition of state taxes to have WF or BGD send the package to a FedEx station outside of TX state boundaries? Not sure how far away from a border you are if that is a do-able option for you.
