2ish carat for an Engagement Ring

Does the quality differ significantly between ERD and other custom makers? Is it worth a 50% premium?

It's a tough question to answer. Have you had a chance to compare the work in person?

For some people, the premium is worth it and for others .. they can't tell the difference and it isn't worth it.

No I have not. To be honest, I would not even know what to look for. That's why I was trying to ask the experienced folk on here.

can you go somewhere and ask them to show you some AGS 000 J's?
Even if you have to look a bit, it would be worth it i think, as many people find a J to be fine for an e ring. And i think it would be a shame to let them go assuming you dont like them, verses doing your homework and making sure one way or the other.

can you go somewhere and ask them to show you some AGS 000 J's?

Talking to ERD, they mentioned that "Hand forged which costs approximately 1200 more is hand crafted from a single plate of platinum and all of the parts are

That is one beautiful ring, but... if you are worried about an Ideal MRB J showing color, I don't think you'd be happy with this one -- it will most definitely show color (from top and especially the sides). With that said, I think it's a gorgeous ring! If you KNOW your FF will be happy with obvious tint, I'd say go for it. But if you're unsure, then I wouldn't go there.

That is one beautiful ring, but... if you are worried about an Ideal MRB J showing color, I don't think you'd be happy with this one -- it will most definitely show color (from top and especially the sides). With that said, I think it's a gorgeous ring! If you KNOW your FF will be happy with obvious tint, I'd say go for it. But if you're unsure, then I wouldn't go there.

What does it exactly mean when you say "tint"? Will it not be sparkle ? Will it look yellowish ?
To be honest, I'm not sure what her reaction would be. I just know she likes something sparkly bc we looked at Tiffany novo and she liked those....

It is more noticeable on the sides of diamonds as you go down the color chart, but once you hit K, you would most likely notice it from the top view in certain lighting conditions. Some people are more sensitive to color than others and notice it in the near colorless range (G-J). Just google diamond color charts and there are plenty of charts that will give you an idea on color for an n/o. If you were worried about the J, you are going the wrong direction on the color chart! Unless you want to get your girlfriend involved with the purchase, I would stay in the H/I range to be safe.

Also, you mentioned your girlfriend likes the tiffany novo. Does she want a cushion? I thought you were searching for a round?

She has never seen a diamond that lower color before and neither have I. Obviously, she doesn't want something that has yellowish teeth look to it. However, I am not so sure this one has that yellow teeth look.

Essentially the debate is whether the color "I" is a "safe" recommendation for an engagement ring, because "I" can be a color where people start noticing tint. Most people say yes (75% in this poll). My opinion, "I" is safe, even possibly J. But below that will start looking yellowish.

These types of preferences are going to be very dependent on the person. You are looking at so many different styles it might just be best to get the option of your future fiancee.

Personally, I think that antique cushion is to die for. I love chunky facets but I'm biased, I have an edwardian engagement ring with the original OEC diamond. Its a j-k color per my jeweler and the color doesn't bother me one bit. I hear people with lower colors say they sometimes prefer it as it gives the diamond more character. It will look white in some lighting and buttery in others. Some people can't stand tint, especially in an engagement ring. Totally a personal preference.

Would your future fiancee be OK with being involved in the decision process? My fiencee let me choose my ring and he then surprised me with the timing. Personally, it is exactly how I would have wanted it to happen. I really wanted to pick out my engagement ring.

For this type of setting you could do CAD/ CAST or hand forged. Honestly I really doubt you will notice a difference. The FAD right now on PS is to go hand forged if you have the budget for it. I really only recommend going handforged when you are incredible picky about your pave or your metal work. When you get down to the nitty gritty details when you look at everything under a loop and go crazy et cetc. For you honestly think with what is easy and go with the CAST version.

Without giving away any details or hints, I showed her the exact diamond from jbg. She wasn't aware it was for sale and I kinda wanted to get her input about the color. She actually liked it, but, in the pics and video, she did mention that some yellowish hue was present.

I emailed jbg asking some questions about the piece.
What info should I be looking for that's not provided ? I asked for an ASET, and specific measurements for HCA. Would a GIA grading be feasible? For a piece like that, what is a good price ?
