Hi all, I've been wanting to purchase a 5 stone ring after pursuing the thread for all those lovely 5 stone rings. I'm shooting for 40 pointers of g/h color and si1 clarity for around $4,500~$5,000. My ring size is a 5.

I'm wondering how to get the best bang for the buck. When I asked local vendors in my area for a price quote for the size and specs mentioned above, i got a pretty wide range of price quotes. Lowest was $3,300 and highest was $4,900. I'm not sure where the price difference comes in.. perhaps cut?

Being a diamond newbie, would it be a better route to go with a trusted vendor such as ID Jewelry or purchase the stones individually on James Allen? The ID Jewelry site is showing 2ctw 5 stone for 4,200 with specs being F/G color, Si1 & Si2 clarity, no mention of cut. Is cut going to matter as much on smaller 40 pointer stones? Also, is it a good idea to get these pointers certed or even possible with my budget?

Has anyone purchase each stone individually for their project? I would appreciate any input!

Since you stated you are new to all of this I would recommend going with a trusted vendor to source the diamonds and create your ring. After being a seasoned member of pricescope, learning your cut and color tolerance later down the road you could venture sourcing your own diamonds.

I would suggest you contact Yekutiel at ID Jewelry. He is very easy to work with and will help you to create a ring within your budged while you will be quite pleased.

Thank you both for your replies. I think I'll be reaching out to ID Jewelry and go from there!

Just wanted to say that Whiteflash has made some gorgeous 5 stone rings over the years, and I think getting the best cut diamonds is well worth it!

Hi Chloe
Sounds like a kewl project!!
Here's one main reason you'll find such a wide spread of prices- grading.
If a seller is offering stones without GIA reports you'll need to take their word on the color clarity and cut.
That's not such a bad thing if the vendor is trustworthy. Of course, from my perspective a trustworthy vendor would tell you the same thing I just did.
You can set GIA graded G next to a GIA graded H and not notice the difference in the ring. But if a person is wanting an exact match, GIA stones of the same color are needed. Also going for vetted GIA EX cut grade will ensure a consistent cut.
Most of the time when we have a client for a five stone in your price range they are more interested in keeping the budget and getting nicely cut, nicely matched stones by eye. Many people do forego the GIA. But not all.

Hi Chloe -

I did a 7 stone ring project just recently and sourced all the stones myself. I had a blast doing it and it came out beautifully.
And yes, cut on any stone matters and a 40 pt stone is definitely big enough to see the difference.

Good luck!
