I just recently bought a 1.61 RB and want to add another to my collection so I leave each of my daughters one as an inheritance one day. I went to look at 2 carats today and they don''t seem that much larger that what I already have...and if I am going to add to...I want to be able to see a difference. Several stores told me they thought a Princess 2 carat( or more )would be my best bet for looking larger than what I already have. Any opinions or ideas from all of you??? Thanks...

For looking a lot larger? A pear, a marquise, or an oval. I think princess cut stones actually look a bit smaller for their carat weight compared to rounds.

Second what Ebree says. Most squares would be smaller, unless you find the right exception to the rule somehow... and if you do, I would bet it will be a radiant not a princess as those tend to come (and look better) at lower depth.

My 2c.

This chart below was made for another poster seeking the largest shape for a given budget, 2 cts and above. Since prices depend on shape... this meant 3 cts fit in for some shapes.

To make the chart, I just picked up the sizes of several stones each with good spread relative to others of the same shape, getting just below the budget for each shape. Anyone can search across shapes like that, I would think. Although for some reason, this doesn't seem to be very often done. Perhaps most decide on a shape before getting to see a line up of different ones?

Anyway, hope this helps:

How about finding one with identical specs as the first one you bought - that way there would be less potential for future sibling rivalry.

I think MQ look the biggest for their carat weight but honestly I think you should go with whatever shape moves you. Obviously you like rounds. What other shapes do you droll over?

I was thinking an EC might be your best bet: both the round and emerald cut are pretty "classic" shapes...maybe that way your daughters will each have a "traditional" shape to choose from, if you think they might have trouble deciding on which they prefer. Have you gotten any hints from them as to which shape they might like later in life, or their preferences now?

Thanks so much for all the visuals...they are really helpful. As for what my daughters would like...that would be whatever I leave them! LOL..If I am going to invest any chunk of money, then I want to get something I will enjoy myself before passing it on....and I want to feel I have gained in size from my current one. I dont really like marquise and pears..maybe it is the points I dont care for...and I do tend to like the more rounded look, such as oval, or maybe even a cushion. I was rather disappointed today when I discovered the next size up wasn''t much different...although the 3 carat oval I tried on sure looked good!!

Maybe I will just not worry so much about the size and just go for a different look from the round. I am thinking of maybe a halo ring for this one as well. That would certainly give me a different look from what I already have. You all have been very helpful...thanks bunches!

My mom did a similar thing for me and my sister. She has two diamonds that she plans on one day passing down to us. One is a 1.56 marquise, and the other is a 1.48 round brilliant. She got the different shapes so that she would enjoy two different looks, BUT got similar carat weights so that she felt she would be giving each of us something of similar value. I think that was a great way to do it. Plus, the different shapes allow her to match them to our personalities.

Don''t forget, there are other shapes out there that might give you the best of both worlds (round vs. square) such as a Radiant or a Cushion...My two favorites!

GREAT IDEA!! I have 3 girls and never thought of doing something like that. Good luck :)
