I am saving for a ring, and shooting for a goal.

What can I get for $20,000 loose diamond? I will worry about the setting later.

I am trying to get the biggest yet best looking diamond possible in one of 3 cuts. Princess, Asscher, or round.

Also, Does $5,000 either way get me signifacntly more or less diamond?

Can some one give me an best guess? I see lots of pricing all over the web and see a fairly broad spectrum of possibilities.

Thanks for the help.

Nick

20k will get you an awesome stone. But I would recommend finding out what her dream ring looks like, I adore round, feel okay about asschers but I don’t find princess cuts at all attractive. After that I would figure out how you rank color, clarity, and carat weight, because cut is imperative.
You might try looking at the search by cut features and at the Show Me The Ring Eye Candy Folder for ideas and inspiration.
Females tend to know what they want, and definitely know what they don’t want in their e-ring, so listen carefully and be sure to buy what she wants.

I know she likes big, so whatever of those three cuts that I can get the biggest with still the best quality is what she wants.

If she wants big go with a RB, it will face up bigger than an asscher and a princess cut. Make sure you read up on here about Cut. Cut is key to buying a gorgeous diamond. Good luck, you have a wonderful budget!!!

How big can I get with this budget, while still being of very good quality and great cut?

Also, what is the size difference if I go down to $15,000?

I am a 25 year old kid and I want this to last for awhile, it will be the nicest thing she gets for a long time.

All imput is good as I know very little.

Hi, Nick...welcome!

Here''s Valeria''s dandy chart comparing different shaped diamonds that all cost the same at the time it was put it together. You might find it interesting.

I agree with Matatora...there is such a huge aesthetic difference between the cuts you mentioned, it probably really would be wise if you find out if she has a preference.

Of the three you mentioned, I think the RB will l@@k biggest for its carat weight.

Of course if "big" is all that matters, according to the chart, elongated stones are the way to go...

Here''s what I learned while searching for stones. The RB will always cost more then any of the fancy cuts. You can get a bigger stone if you go for the fancies. My guess is you will be able to get a 2c fancy for 20k, but the size will be smaller if you go for a round. And, of course, the cost will depend on color, clarity, etc.

Curse you nick, making me look bad.

My 25 year old broke ass can only afford 8k.

Don''t feel bad, I have been lucky to have good opportunities since graduating college.

Also, I see lots of rings on costco.com, Are these good judges of price>

You can get a bigger stone if you go for the fancies.

you can get a stone that weigh''s more but it may not look bigger than a round of a lesser weight..

out of the 3 listed usually rounds will look the biggest for the $$. It will take a larger fancy to have a same diameter/spread as a well cut round.

I understand now, you are saying that even though the 2ct round in weight is small it will look far bigger than a 3 ct asscher.

And you are also saying that a 3 ct round does not look significatly larger than a 2.

Also, if I have a friend in the business does that get me any sort of discount?

Amazon has a great chart that you can print with actual diamond sizes.

here's the link. click on carat and scroll half way down the page to the print a page link..

please keep in mind, cut is the most important C..

alot of the fancier cuts like asscher etc have more weight in the depth of the stone, while round is more proportionate so it ends up looking bigger from above. for example if i have a 3c round, i may need to get a 4c+ asscher to have the same 'up top' diameter as the 3c round.

if you go with a marquis, or pear or something like that where the shape is different than a square or round, you would get more visual impact, but it's my experience that one has to really want and LOVE that difference in the shape to own it.

so if you are looking at round, asscher or princess then a round will most likely look the biggest for the same carat weight. rounds also have the best 'light return' for those 3 cuts so that they appear the most sparkly to your eye...asschers and princesses sparkle in different ways from rounds.

personally i am a huge size whore so i love huge round stones!!! i would love a 3c round stone.

what sort of color and clarity are you thinking about? for me i had a G, H and now a J stone and i loved all of them but i loved the J the most because it's the biggest! so if you don't have huge color hangups then i'd say you could get a near colorless like H/I/J and get a bigger stone. same with clarity, you could get something like an SI1 eye clean stone from a reputable lab like GIA or AGS and no one would know it's not a VVS and you could get a bigger stone.

just as an example, there was a 3c J SI2 ACA recently for $25k on WF's site but it's been gone for a while. a 3c now in that same color etc would probably be more now that prices have gone up a bit.

so for 20k in a round...i would estimate something like a 2.70 J SI H&A or something like a 2.25 I SI H&A or similar. these are just kind of thrown out there. there aren't too many great stones in the 2-3c range right now, so you may also have to be patient and look for a while!!

ETA: hehee, my estimate was spot on for the 2.25 I SI....check this out for 20k.

i think you really need to find out her taste: those three cuts are all vastly different in appeal and most people here on pricescope would fall into a camp that would only like one of those but never more than one of those shapes --if that makes sense. Meaning the person who like a round likes a round, the person who likes a princess might also like a radiant, the person liking an asscher might also like am Emerald cut....................but rarely would someone dying for an asscher EVER like a princess. All factors being equivalent, namely cut and color, rounds are the most per carat. Princesses are usually the least per carat. Princess cuts are viewed by dealers as the most trendy.............so many factors............

Here''s another diamond shape and size comparison chart. I like that one because it also gives the sizes in inches, as well as making it very easy to visually see the difference in the different shapes.

I agree with Window shoppers commnets. As a true asscher girl, I do love the emerald cuts, but would not like a princess for myself. I also agree that a RB will give you the most sparkle and size appearance for the $$$. My husband started out with a $30K budget for a 3ct. asscher. In the end he spent $50K plus and purchased a 4.25ct asscher. He had a size in mind when the stone was on my hand and going by carat weight in our case was tricky. My stone probably appears to be 3.5ct (maybe) but we obviously paid for a lot more diamond than what you see.

I was propsed to without an engagement hand in hand. It was the best decision for us because we both are thrilled iwth the outcome and I sure if you go that route or at least pin your girlfriend down on a shape you can''t go wrong. It is a big investment and you obviously want the both of you to be happy with the purchase for many years to come. Good luck and letus know what you select!!!

Wowza! Do you have pics of this 4.25 ct ??????

There should be pictures in here somewhere...either under "orange_horse" or "orange_horse_fiance"....we are old news in this circle so I can''t even tell you where too look.

I would definitely vote for an Asscher when we''re talking about a large stone. I just don''t think that large round stones are as elegant (I love rounds and have one, just don''t like huge ones). I agree with Matatora, I do not like princess cuts at all, large or small. Find out what your gf would prefer!

I know she likes big, so whatever of those three cuts that I can get the biggest with still the best quality is what she wants.

IMO, 'large' means pear, oval or marquise (pears are probably more popular these days, but ... diamonds are diamonds). Or a rectangular radiant - squares and rounds are not terribly large looking. Since the price per carat for these is not as much as for rounds ... there could be one around 3 cts for the money (thinking nice cut, GIA grades and H / VS2-Si1).

I admit to being terribly biased on this one - I don''t like RB''s or princess cuts. That''s just me. I don''t actually like the ''flash'' those cuts provide. Again though, that''s just a personal preference!
I adore emerald cuts, and asscher cuts are my 2nd fav. Seems to me that you could, if you wanted, find a really beautiful diamond in either of those cuts that would look BIG!

Happy Shopping - can''t wait to see what you choose!

I love the marquise with the halo around it set horizontally across the finger. Let me say I am not usually a fan
or marquise stone but in that setting it looks fabulous, unique and huge!!!

My first diamond was a 2.06ct I SI1 good cut. It always disappointed me and after discovering pricescope I realised
the cut made a huge difference.

After spending a lot of time learning on this site I decided cut was the most important therefore I went hearts and
arrows. Second to me was colour. That was something I looked at all the time so I went for D colour. Next was
size. Ok I was spoilt and went for 3.0ct and finally I went for clarity and again went SI1.

So I now love my D SI1 excellent cut 3.0ct diamond. It sparkles like crazy and is beautiful but as mentioned if
I had my time again or wanted an fabulous right hand ring or more bang for my buck I would go for the marquise with
the halo. Does someone have a photo of it to post?
