how obvious are inclusions in an SI2 in a roughly 2 carat stone??? I''ve been thinking vs1-2, but its just amazing the price difference if you drop down to a si1-2.
thanks

It depends on the stone and the type of inclusion(s). You would have to see the stone first before making a decision to buy or not.

Good luck!

It is very difficult to answer your question.

I often get requests for SI2's, because the price becomes very interesting, but I find it often very difficult to deliver, because I do not like most SI2's myself.

We however have a magnificent 2.20 G-SI2 available right now. I can tell you that it takes time to find and cut such a stone. So, for sure it is possible to get a great SI2, but it takes time and a lot of disappointments before you find one.

Live long,

Paul

If you confirm that the stone is eye-clean you could get a great deal! I bet most SI2's of that size would have a visible inclusion but maybe that will not bother you depending on the area of the inclusion? Say if it can be set under a prong..then no one knows it's there!

I agree.

1/2ct SI2's are often OK, but very few bigger than 1 ct look genuinely eye clean.

If Paul says he has a nice one then I would believe him because I know he is more a hobbyist diamond lover than calculating business person

As a rule I draw a line at SI1 for >1.5ct - but there are border line SI2's SI1's that lucked out

Because of its size, the inclusions may be visible to the naked eye. But then again, I can be wrong, it all depends on what kind of inclusions there are and where they're placed in the stone. My advice to you is try to get a stone with includsions no centered in the stone, but rather near the girdle, this way inclusions are not as visible for a quality stone of that type. You will have to see it yourself to see if you're really getting a good deal out of it.

Thanks
that really helps. so do you all think that SI1 would be ok??? the price difference is just extraordinary!!!

Filp I disagree.

You will always be able to see inclusions near the edge (unless you choose a setting which will cover possibly larger amount of the stone).

Graders are always easier on inclusions near the edge, and harder on those through the center.

I also personally prefer an SI that has 3 or 4 well spread out inclusions - these are always impossible to see - like 5 vS1 sized inclusions.

But beware the cloud that can not be seen that (rarely) is graded SI2 and actually dulls the diamond.

Obsessive, you need to be o.k. w/ perhaps at times seeing something in the stone. Most diamonds, once set are viewed from more than a foot away. In that case, many are eye clean. If viewed w/ scrutiny, many will take a while to find the flaw.

Eye clean is a relative term to the person wearing it. That certainly isn't proper diamond lingo - just consumer lingo. Some eyes are very keen - some like to look at a large pretty stone & see the good not the bad. You need to decide who you are.
