My bf took his mom''s diamond to get appraised and sent it to Mark Morrel for a setting. He told me that it''s 2.1 round D IF but the jeweler appriased it at $8000. And that MM quoted him $8000 to fit it in the flame setting due to it''s "unusual" shape. Am I missing something here or do neither of these numbers add up?

Hi mmdiamond and welcome,

We need a lot more info to be able to help you, firstly does the diamond have a GIA lab report or if not, which lab report does it have, or does it not have one at all? A 2ct D IF which is GIA or AGS graded should appraise at a lot more than 8k, but if you could post more info on the diamond then we might be able to help you further. If you could post all the info from the lab report should it have one, then that would also give us a better idea, see below for the info needed.

lab report and cut grade if applicable
depth%
table%
crown and pavilion angles
polish and symmetry grades
girdle thickness
star and lower girdle facet percentages
fluorescence if applicable
diameter in MM

I have no idea what MM meant about the '' unusual shape'' of the diamond, nor would I want to speculate on what he meant, you would be best asking him to clarify, MM is highly reputable and I am sure he will be pleased to elaborate.

Lorelei, you are assuming the OP''s stone is a round.

Probably it is not, which is why MM charges setting it that much.

Anyway, more info is required. GIA graded stone or just an old ungraded stone?
