2.45 carat diamond. What is wrong with this diamond???

I am considering the diamond linked below (seems to be same diamond at both sites).

However, it seems to be 2 or 3 thousand less than other very similar diamonds. The cut seems to be graded ideal based on the listings from these websites and also from the GIA FacetWare Cut Estimator. What makes this diamond cheaper? Are there any concerns that jump out at you when looking at the report of this diamond? Any additional information you think I should try to find out before purchasing?

AGS DQD, HCA 3.5

If you're looking for fool-proof, keep looking. IF you want to go into this, need an Ideal Scope and ask if it's eye-clean.

The stone described by James Allen and Union are the same diamond.

It has an AGS report without the cut grade being disclosed. GIA''s cut grade estimator is not equal to what AGS does.


This stone has a somewhat shallow crown height, crown angle and pavilion, which is why it scores 3.5 on the HCA. For this size stone though, this may not be too bad.

However, this stone may in fact be a very pretty stone, but it could also not be as well. It needs to be seen to be sure of its light return, craftsmanship in cutting, etc.

I''d ask the sellers if they would possibly get the more advanced AGS report. This MIGHT be able to be done without sending the stone back to AGS. I believe AGS may possibly have this data already in their computer database. Then you would know the AGS cut grade. You could also opt to have an appraiser with the AGS PGS software estimate the AGS cut grade, if the seller can provide you with the Sarin .srn scan file.

AGS is releasing an updated version of the PGS software, most likely this week. If you decide that it is more efficient to have an appraiser with the sofware to run the analysis, make sure he has the updated software version, as the corrections made may be more accurate, and "up to the moment".

The AGS report was done in October of 2006. Why would the report not include a cut grade? Does the fact that a cut grade is not included almost certainly mean that it would have received a low cut grade?
Regarding the 3.5 on the HCA, how accurate is it? For example, does a score of 2 ALWAYS mean that diamond will have better cut related performance that one with a score of 3.5, or is this just more of a rough indication?

If cut is very important to me, what is the range I should look for in the HCA score?

As of Oct 2006, the "old" DQR was still available, which has a cut grade, but not based on light performance, but on proportions. It didn''t get the new or old DQR because it probably didn''t get 0 under the new, and definitely didn''t get 0 under the old.

It means that a 2 might have a better cut, but it means the 3.5 definitely doesn''t.
