I am unsure if this is a good stone for the money. Please help give me a sense if this would be a wise purchase.

Thanks,
Bill

I just did a little price comparison shopping on some diamond sites and threw your proportions into the HCA (look at Tools tab, Cut Adviser) and it scored a 1. Generally around here it seems that the HCA is used as a rejection tool (generally want 2 or under if possible) but in this case since the stone is purchased I think a 1 sounds pretty darn neat. It got a rating of excellent in every category except for spread, where it got a very good.

I am by no means an expert and there are some very experienced people here who will tell you better than I can if this was a good purchase but based on the prices I saw for GIA and AGS certed stones with the same stats and similar proportions I''d say that you got a nice stone there at a nice price!

I have not purchased it yet - I am trying to determine if it is a good stone at that price. The price seems low for its size/specs compared to what I''ve seen online. What else should I look for? It is from a large B&M (not mall type) that does some online business. Are there any questions I need to ask?

Hi Bill

I don't know if you are aware of how the grading labs rank but in a nutshell, GIA and AGS are considered to be the gold standard, EGL, IGI and so on are considered to grade less strictly in some circumstances which also explains the price, EGL graded diamonds are typically priced lower than GIA/ AGS. This link explains in greater detail more on the various grading labs.

Also do you know which EGL lab graded the diamond? Out of these labs, EGL USA is generally considered to be the strongest EGL lab, Israel, Antwerp, South Africa and so on less so. Therefore it is important to know which EGL lab has graded this diamond. As to whether it meets the standards of the ' true' h&a diamonds as we know them here is debatable without images of both the hearts and arrows and even then chances are it might not. If having a h&a stone with a crisp and true h&a patterning is important to you, I would suggest looking at some of the branded h&a diamonds such as Hearts on Fire ( although these are spendy) if you prefer to buy from a brick and mortar store. Online brands are available as Infinity and A Cut Above from Whiteflash, also some of the other vendors have hand selected h&a.

The diamond itself appears to be of reasonable cut quality, if you do decide to go with this one make sure you have a good return policy and make sure to stipulate in writing that you can return the diamond for any reason during the return policy should you change your mind or the diamond does not appraise as you wish. Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your areahere.

This article explains about h&a and how they are graded, so if having a ' true' h&a stone is important to you, then you will have a better idea of what to look for and how to evaluate any so called h&a diamond.

It is an EGL International cert...not sure which country.

Should I try to focus on only GIA or AGS graded stones?

I would advise doing so.

I would like to get a round stone that is at least 1.5ct. Doesn't have to be H&A specifically, just something that looks great.

I can spend up to $15,000 - but I am open to anything in the 10k-15k range. I have warmed up to the concept of buying online. I am more concerned with eye clean than "purity".

I think I would like to go with G color and then bigger as price allows but I am open to hearing an argument to go for D-F. Or am I thinking way too high on color? Should I consider H/I?

I've looked online, but I really don't know what I am looking for on the images. Thank you for any suggestions.

I like the last one that Lorelei posted! Notably bigger and you most likely would not see the difference between a G and an H. Most people seem to think that G/H is the sweet spot where you do not see any color yet save the money that D/E/F would cost. I also personally like SI1 stones. Many are eye clean (though you have to check) and again they are a lot less mone ythan VS2. I wouldn't pay for a VS1 since I think it is overkill.

Brian Gavin Diamonds has a few to call about if you are interested. I can't link to their blog where the diamonds are posted, but go to www.briangavindiamonds.com and you can find it.

Here they are:

AGS-1040376130006 Brian Gavin H&A 1.767 H SI1 56.1 61.6 $14,780.00
AGS-1040381680008 Brian Gavin H&A 1.788 J VS2 56 61.5 $11,605.00 (depending on your color tolerance)
AGS-1040381680016 Brian Gavin H&A 1.53 G SI1 57.5 61.3 $12,366.00
AGS-1040381680022 Brian Gavin H&A 1.61 I SI1 57 61.2 $10,632.00 (this one would not show much body color either)

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/Whiteflash-ACA-cut-diamond-2192369.htm good size and price may not be eye clean though
