Hello All,
I’m working on this project and wanted to ask your opinion on this for 2.0 tcw.

I’m getting a 4 prong basket setting with a low profile and jumbo pushbacks.

My dilemma is the metal to set it in.

I will be wearing these as my everyday earrings, taking them out to clean. I don’t have any allergies.

All of my diamond jewelry is set in either platinum or 18 kt white gold, so I don’t have any experience with 14 kt at all.

Do I set it in platinum or 14 kt? The jeweler I’m working with only has 14 kt or platinum.

What are some good reasons for each?

I have mine in platinum. I like it, as i have sensitivity to some metals. I like that i don’t have to rodium plate them either. Have you asked the jeweler what they recommend??

With Platinum, one would not need to worry about the need for re-plating at a later date.

However, with earrings and pendants, they are not going to be bashed about much, compared with rings and bracelets.

Therefore, I personally would opt for 14K WG as I do not have any issues with metal allergy. That's what I have for all my earrings except for one pair of custom jackets (need to check as I can't remember).

DK :))

Another vote for 14K WG!

WG - platinum is too heavy on the ears

Another vote for WG — for daily wear I’d want to avoid the weight of platinum.

I have 2 ctw studs which are set in platinum. I love them. They are light as a feather on my ears. The amount of metal used in stud earrings is so little that the weight difference between gold and platinum is negligible.

Platinum tends to be cooler in color temperature. WG very slightly warmer. Depends which you prefer. Since I love cooler colors, and the diamonds in my studs are D color, I went with platinum.

I too have 2 ctw studs set in platinum, four prong baskets. I was worried about the weight too but need not have worried. I just didn’t want the replating issue to deal with nor any allergies that might arise over time. I really love them and the weight is not an issue at all.

Apparently gold is very expensive right now so platinum might not be too much more. I’d ask. My preference is always plat for rings but for earrings and things I’ve been fine with 14k white gold. I never get it replated and it’s been just fine.

I just got new studs and went thru ID jewelery. I thought I wanted platinum but he had a list of reasons was WG was lighter and best for studs. Mine are 1.81 in WG martini settings and feel like air. There is so little metal and it’s weightless.

Thanks everyone for your input. I went into this project thinking I was pretty sure that it was going to be platinum, but now I don’t know. The cost difference isn’t much, these will be the forever setting, I’m not planning on upgrading or resetting these at all.

I have had my .33 tcw Tiffany platinum diamond studs that I wore everyday for over 20 years, so this is a huge upgrade for probably longer. The Tiffany pair are screwbacks and sometimes I feel the stems at night when I’m sleeping.

IDJ recommended 14 K WG since he said that I would have to replate it after a few years and that it would dull after a few years. His platinum is 90/10. With his 14 K WG, he said you never have to replate it.

I like the look of platinum and the mindset that I’m setting such a sizable sized diamonds in earrings as a fairly substantial piece of fine jewelry that should likewise be set in a fitting metal that is used for high quality investment jewelry.

Even though IDJ says 14 k , I still don’t know if I can get platinum out of my mind.

Decisions, decisions....

I don’t think you should pigeonhole things into specific metals based on value. JMO

Platinum! One thing to keep in mind, metal allergies can develop over time, so better to get platinum in case (and possibly to prevent an allergy from forming).
