Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a stone for a ring, and found one that looked interesting on B2C.

Carat Weight : 1.01
Cut : Excellent
Color : J
Clarity : I1
Price($) : $2577.19
Lab Name : GIA
Certificate No : 5136017545
Depth : 61.40
Table : 58.00
Polish : Excellent
Symmetry : Excellent
Girdle : M-STK
Culet : None
Fluorescence : None
Measurements : 6.42x6.45x3.95

The certificate can be seen here: http://www.b2cjewels.com/Certificate.aspx?StockNo=2863961

I've requested an analysis of the inclusions, and got this reply: "I have put in a request with my overseas gemologist to examine this diamond and provide me with the comments, as it is stocked in Mumbai, India. Will update you with the comments by tomorrow morning."

So I suppose my questions are: a) from looking at the certificate, what are the experts' opinions/feelings on this one, and b) can I trust comments from a gemologist in Mumbai rather than directly from B2C themselves? :|

Thank you in advance for any help you can give. :)

I guess my question to you would be what's more important? Clarity or price? This looks like a bit too much for my taste, but if you're ok with that much going on in the stone it's up to you. I wouldn't worry as much about where the gemologist is, they all go through the same training if it's a GIA gemologist. I, personally, would pass on this one.

It is not the needle that is the grade setting inclusions but the crystal. Inclusions are listed in order of significance under the inclusion map. High chance that would not be eye-clean.

I agree with the other commenters. It really depends on what matters to you now. I don't think it matters that the gemologist is in India. Just out of curiosity, have you seen any stones in person with different levels of inclusions SI2-I range just so you can get a sense of comfort with inclusions? Same for color?

At that price, it has a very high probability of having a visible inclusion..as most I1's will. Is this for an engagement ring or for another piece of jewelry? I wouldn't even consider it for a ring. But there are people here who found decent I1's for diamond stud earrings that worked because people don't get up close to ears to be able to see the inclusions as well.

I would pass on this one and look for a slightly smaller stone with better clarity and or/color. Did you notice the GIA report states "a patch of color" not shown under comments? Not good in my opinion.

GIA lists inclusions in order of severity - in this stone the crystal(s), not the needles, are the grade-making inclusions, and they're going to be your biggest problem. The big one at 9 o'clock will sit on top of a main that will look black when you lean over the stone so if it's black it may not stand out terribly at close range if you're looking at the stone directly face-up, but once you tilt the stone slightly and the obstruction pattern changes the masking effect disappears.

I wouldn't do it, personally. Ditto DS - stones are generally priced to sell, and that's not the sort of stone I personally feel comfortable taking chances on in a blind online purchase.

ETA: is it for an Ering?

Hi,
I would look for something else! For a ring, eng. or not, every time you look at it, you will see inclusions and who wants that? It looks like it's filled with a lot of them.

Thank you everyone for your helpful comments, and apologies for the late reply. I did indeed note the "patch of colour", and it turns out that actually means "all-over brownish tinge" (!) according to the gemologist who finally got back to me. He also recommended that I steer clear of this one.

I'm really fed up of searching, to be honest with you all! I've been looking for a stone for over five months now and just cannot seem to find anything in budget that would remotely suit my requirements. Am I just going to have to go over the $3000 mark? I really don't want to, but I also don't want to be totally unreasonable and expect a perfectly cut white stone of relatively large size for a not very large amount of money.

Just to be clear, this stone is for an e-ring (an upgrade). I'm basically trying to find a stone around the 0.85-0.9 mark, in a ~J colour bracket, Ex cut, with no BLACK inclusions - I don't mind crystals, clouds, or anything like that.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be more than happy to hear them. Exhausted from searching and on the verge of giving the whole thing up. Fingers crossed for a lottery win -_-;...

I know blue nile isn't the best place to buy a stone, but they have quite a few in your price range. There's some .90 carat for less than $3000. I guess you just gotta make sure they are eye clean and there's a return policy if you're not happy.

If you drop to 0.84 you can save yourself quite a bit. http://www.bluenile.com/round-diamond-1-carat-or-less-ideal-cut-j-color-si2-clarity_LD02936335

0.85 with higher clarity http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?track=head#diamonds_pid=LD02812171 HCA score of 1.0

Looking at James Allen:
Round ideal/H+A cut stones up to J in color, up to SI2, 0.85 carat and above, $3100 or less:
There's only one option and it has visible black inclusions.
I'd say you need to increase your budget or decrease your carat size.
If you go down to 0.8 carat they have about 30 stones in your budget range. I haven't checked them out on HCA, but it seems like there are at least a few good contenders.

0.82 carat H+A http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1495910.asp
Scores 2.5 on HCA, but is an AGS0 stone, so it's already been rated for light performance. It does look like it has a small dark crystal that is visible, but I don't know how noticeable it would be in real life.

Yep, the search is not hard when the budget and specs are realistic. You either need to increase the budget or look for a smaller diamond. I would not buy SI from any source who cannot examine the stone and tell you that it is 100% eyeclean.

This stone is a good one and has a good ASET image. It is dinged on cut because of the partially thick girdle, but it still looks really nice. Of course you'd have to ask GOG about how eyeclean it is.

or you could go a little whiter and cleaner:
