1ct e/f or 1.2 G colour round help??

New to this site but other posts look as if someone could help me decide on a big decision...

I am replacing my damaged D If 0.77pt round engagement ring IGi cert with a new one,

Options I have are a lovely 1.2 G, Vs1 excellent cut good spread at 6.9 in platinum Gia cert or should I opt for a smaller stone at 1 carat in the E/f range? I am not an expert here and can't really tell the difference in colours....

The G does look nice and white, I compared it in daylight to a D 1.5 vvs1 and I couldn't see any major difference..just concerned to take the plunge from a D stone......is it worth stepping up to a f or e for a slightly smaller stone? are Gs considered good colours? Just I know technically its lower on the scale than a D...size is key too but dont want it to be too big !

Any advice would be massively appreciated...

you need to post the proportions of these stones before members will comment... show us the cut quality first then we can talk about color and clarity.

Agree with DF we need to know the proportions of the G stone your considering. In general though a G is a very nice balance of value and quality. In a well cut stone they appear very white and bright. But its the diamonds proportions that will determine its overall light performance and beauty.

The cut is excellent, symmetry excellent and polish v good.

there is also a feather quite near the edge which makes me nervous as my previous one cleaved....so not sure if this is a risky position to have a feather so near the edge?

This is a 60/60 type stone and has the added benefit of having a slightly larger spread than a more traditional tolk idea cut. It will probably favor white light return over colored light or a combination of the two. This is appealing to some people, but others search for a different 'flavor' if you will. My personal preference is for a small table and high crown because I like lots of colored light return and will sacrifice white light...and a bit of face up size for it.

This particular stone didn't score well on the HCA, probably because of the pav angle over 41 and the corresponding crown angle of 34. It could still be a good stone but you would need idealscope images to say for sure. GIA rounds and averages it's numbers, so if this particular stone actually has a slightly shallower crown and or pavilion angle then it could be just fine. Adjusting the pavilion angle to just 41 instead of 41.2 on the HCA changes the score dramatically, but again you would need either magnified images of the actual stone or idealscope images. You've also had the benefit of seeing it in person and thought that it was lovely, and in the end it's ultimately your eyes that will be the best judge, I would just caution you to view the stone in many different lighting environments. Jewelry stores have trick lighting that make ALL stones no matter how great or poorly cut, look like winners. So ask to see it outside or by a window, in their office, etc. and only buy with a good return policy so that if you decide it doesn't perform the way you thought it might once you get it home, you can return it for you full money back!

I forgot to add that the feather likely isn't an issue, this is a VS1 stone so there should be absolutely NO durability issues. GIA takes this into consideration when assessing the stone and assigning a clarity grade. Durability usually doesn't need to be considered until SI2 or lower and on a stone by stone basis. SI2's are typically fine but warrant a gemological review depending on the nature and placement of the inclusion, I1's and lower in my opinion always require a gemological inspection.

Honestly, it's unlikely that any GIA EX stone is going to be a anything but beautiful. We are sort of cut nuts around here and each of us has our own particular preferences. It's questionable that a non enthusiast would be able to see the subtle difference between one GIA EX and another. Like I said, there is no tool available that can supplement what you see with your own eyes. Having had the chance to see the stone in person is a huge bonus! Take a look again and try to assess it without emotion, look at it beside another GIA EX with slightly different proportions and see what you think. And again...lots of different lighting environments!

Hello, i'm sure its ok, especially to my untrained eye...will try and see if again although it may have to go back to the dealer....?! which is a bit annoying. jeweller has come back with an alternative smaller stone F colour, excellent GIA ref 5146765159...its VS2, not VS1..does this make any difference do you think? Smaller which i;m thinking is good. If I get 5 mins at work i'll put it in the HCS score thing which was really interesting...
I want to look at them side by side but hoping the other one doesn't go back!

Ask your jeweler if he can hold the first stone for you long enough for you to view both stones side by side. He should be able to do this for you. I'm not able to view the report for the other stone without the exact ct weight, so I don't have any advice to offer on that. You mention that it was smaller and that was a 'good thing'. Do you think that the first stone is too large? What would your ideal size be?

You should be fine with a VS2, they are very clean stones and a great value! Good Luck!!!

I was a bit worried the 1.2 might be a bit large, i do have wider fingers so the 0.77 original never really did it for me..but then i don't want to keep having to explain the difference in my ring size from before..if that makese sense?? Although i'd really love a larger diamond as my finders can carry it...!

If you’re going to buy something from the Brian Gavin Select category (or anybody else for that matter) the best advice that I can give you is to try and keep the proportions within the following range to maximize light return in round brilliant cut diamonds:

Total depth between 59 – 61.8% and maybe up to 62%
Table diameter between 53 – 58%
Crown angle between 34.0 – 35.0 degrees and I truly prefer 34.3 – 34.9 degrees
Pavilion angle between 40.5 – 41.0 degrees and I truly prefer 40.6 – 40.9 degrees

^ Those are a rather restrictive set of values for helping the online buyer pick the best-cut stones. Plug the numbers from the report into the HCA cut adviser and look for a score of 2 or less. It's a rejection tool. Lower score than 2 is not "better." Some people say up to 3 is okay. The ASET image shows the light reflection (or leakage) for that individual diamond.

You can search for the "cheat sheet" and there are some older posts that give an expanded version. Table size is personal preference; larger table is had a different look than a smaller one. I like 55%-56% best. Taller crown (higher %) and steeper crown angle and smaller table gives more fire. Larger table, lower crown %, lower crown angle = possibly a bias toward more brilliance than fire, or perhaps the fire is around the rim of the diamond and is seen more when the stone is at an angle.

I have to run, but hopefully that will give you some leads on how to evaluate what they are offering you.

As for color, I'd definitely be okay with a G vs. E or F in that size range. Cut is my first priority, then color if I am looking for a white diamond, and clarity is last for me.

Given that you find a nice cut stone with equal properties, I say go bigger and take a G over a smaller E/F
