Is there a differance in the quality of gold that comes from say Kmart as opposed to a mall store or high end jewelry store? My friend owns a high end jewelry boutique and she orders from some of the same vendors as Macy''s, Kmart, and Home Shopping. I know some of the gold is hollow and some solid, but other than that is one any better than the other? This aslo applies to Silver.

I don''t think there''s a difference in the quality of the gold (caveat that it might be hollow)...in terms of how much is alloy and how much is gold, though at some mall stores there may be a preponderance of 10K instead of 14K or 18K gold, each of which has its place and purpose.

The other thing to watch out for is that some of the lower end places may have a lot of gold PLATED items that only mention the fact that they are plated and not solid gold in teeny tiny letters and whatnot....but rather try to advertise that LOOK! it''s gold!!
