I am doing a poll to help in deciding the metal to cast my engagement ring in. I am doing it in unplated white gold, and am going for a bit of an antique feel. I want durability and an aesthetically appealing look.

Votes please!

18k unplated white gold or 14k unplated white gold

The 18K will be less white, if that matters to you. I seem to recall your stone was an I color... if that's the case, I'd go 14K for the whiter color to match it better, maybe.

ETA: I'm excited to hear you decided on the unplated wg! I have a few pieces in 14K unplated and I think the color is amazing, a lovely cream shade. I bet you'll love it, whichever you decide on.

I'd probably use the Stuller X1 14k white gold, personally.

Useless unless specific alloy content is given. 18k/14k only gives the amount of weight the gold takes up in the entire alloy, how white, how tough and how much gold content there actually is in the alloy is unknown without knowing the actually alloy content.

Just look at the WG thread. 19k white of Argen and 14k X1 of stuller, both are supposed to be whiter than standard 14k WG, whatever that 14k WG means is another thing.

ditto

18k is pretty soft, so I'd go with 14k.

the alloy would be palladium. :) hope that helps.

LGK- could you post some photos for me over your unplated white gold pieces. I think it might really help in my decision if you are able to do so.

Thanks so much!

Have you seen samples of the difference in color between the 18 and 14? What is the price difference?
