I was happily enjoying my new Kelege ring with a family center stone when I realized tonight that there was an ever so slight rattle when I put the ring up to my ear. Upon further inspection, there is a hair of side to side movement of the stone within the 4 prong setting. WHAT TO DO???? I am so upset and dissappointed. This was a custom piece and my finace bought it through Nordstrom in San Diego but I am in Boston. I don''t think the stone is at risk for falling out but now I am afraid to wear it. Furthermore, I am hoping that the fine jewelry department here at the Nordstrom outside Boston can fix it because I really don''t want it to go through the mail 2 more times to go back to Kelege to be fixed. I saw a few similar stories about this occuring with platinum prongs but I never expected it. How common is it? Should I be really worried about my stone? And... should I let Nordstrom or a local jeweler fix it or should I let it go all the way back to Kelege in LA? Ugh!!

I''m so sorry to hear about your ring!

I would contact your original seller to see what your warranty is on this ring and ask their advice for bringing it to your local Nordstroms. I wouldn''t advise taking it to another jeweler in case that voids your warranty.

Is your ring insured?

I would avoid wearing it in case the stone falls out.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I'm so sorry about this!
Same thing happened to me when I was first engaged-only it was a month later.
Don't wear the ring, and take it over to Nordstrom, and have them take a quick look. It may be very easy for them to tighten the prongs. That's all it took for mine. I know yours is a custom setting, but it may give you quick peace of mind if it's a simple fix. I'd start there. (I'd also call and ask about the warranty-like Jelly just wrote)
Hope you feel better!

If it were me, and unless Nordstrom has an onsight jeweler, I would just take it to a local jeweler that you trust. It sounds like the prongs just need to be tightened, and that is not a big deal at all. I don''t think that I would go through the hassle and expense of insuring your ring to ship it back.

I''d definitely have all work done through Nordstrom (local). If there were any further problems, Kelege or Nordstrom might refuse to fix it for free if someone else touches it.

Thanks for all of your input. In response to some questions, yes the ring is insured and my fiance told me last night that Kelege has a lifetime warranty. So, I guess the plan is to go to Nordstrom this weekend and see if someone can do it on site. I am so dissappointed that I cannot wear it this week but I guess that is the safest option! I will keep you posted. Hopefully it is just a simple fix and nothing more....

I don''t know how your stone is set, but my old diamond sat rather high in a 4 prong setting. I would frequently smack it on something (like the washer putting clothes in or out), and it would get a little loose in the platinum setting. I just made a habit of having it tightened.

I would not say it is set too high... here is the link below to pics. I guess we will just have to see what the jeweler says..

Yeah, I''m a newbie at this, but it doesn''t look all that high to me. Beautiful ring! And, what an awesome engagement story! It sounds like you have a great ring and an fantastic fiance!

You can go to the Jewelry Building in Boston, upstairs of where E B Horn Jewelers is located. Its on Washington St. accross from Filenes. Go into a diamond setter and ask them to tighten your stone. There are some who might refuse to do this for you and many who''d be glad to do it for you probably. It is a strange environment, but you''d get it done while you wait and that would be the end of the problem. At least for now.

ringplease, just as an FYI, Nordstrom''s doesn''t have in house bench jewelers - they tend to select one fine quality bench jeweler in each location and they use that person for all their work - repairs, sizing, anything outside of something the manufacturer would take care of. I happen to know the salesteam at one of the Nordies Fine Jewelry counters in one of the SD locations and they''re excellent folks. I''d call the shop your bf went through, explain what happened and ask them if they have a preference on which local Nordies you should take your ring to. I say that because some Nordies have better relationships with other stores than others. I''d take it in to Nordies and let them deal with the tightening. I doubt it has to go to Kelege to tighten the prongs but personally, I''d want to deal with the store that I got the ring from - in this case, Nordies - because if they screw it up, they''ll have to take care of you...If you go to a third party and something gets screwed up, what will you do? I think you need to stay with Nordies on this one. They have excellent customer service and they''ll take good care of you and fix the problem!

I''m sorry this has happened to your baby. But don''t fret. Any trusted jeweler can tighten those prongs and check for defects.

Hmm... guess i have a decision to make. I hate to send it away and the risk of the shipping makes me nervous, but iIwould also hate to have another jeweler work on it and have something go wrong. Tightening a prong seems simple enough... Grr!!! I called Kelege this morning and they said they would be happy to fix it ASAP and Nordies will overnight it from the Natick store. It just seems like such a hassle to send it all that way.... Just when I was getting used to it on my finger

This sort of thing may seem like a disservice to you, but it is more common then you think. I have many times valued new rings that had loose stones (I tightened them before they left- a very easy thing to do, usually). It only takes a minute to fix and the jeweler who fixes it may be able to make it more secure then when you bought it. Make sure they check the setting under magnification for any damage or problems.

Dave Atlas gave you some GREAT advise- this would definately be the place to take it. If you are worried about the quality fo jeweler, ask for a client list of examples of work.

Good luck.

Sorry gentlemen but I cant agree with you on this one! Please, do yourself a favor and let Nordies ship it out for you. That way it's their responsibility if anything gets lost, though I doubt it will (they ship this sort of thing all the time). I'd NEVER EVER let anyone else do anything to my ring if it was a Kelege and I got it at Nordies. Let them take care of it. You already paid a premium price for the ring and part of that price is for Nordies customer service, so use it! You might be tempted to go to a local guy to fix the prongs but I'm pretty picky and if someone tightened the prongs and they smushed or bent them ever so slightly - and make no mistake, I'd see it! - I'd be really upset. Hence let the maker deal with this issue. Good luck.

I''m with surfgirl. i''d have nordstroms take care of for you.

Ditto! We already saw what a local jeweler did to Dee Jay''s Kelege ring

, and I simply wouldn''t let anyone else touch it! It''s really no big deal for them to send it and send it back especially if they are willing to do overnight.

ringplease, I just had the EXACT same thing happen to me. In fact, as I was reading your post I thought, this could be me typing right now! Here's my link: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/really-upset-need-to-vent.75669/
As of right now, my ring is down in So. Cal with my jeweler (I'm in Nor. Cal) and I have to say that I had so much anxiety shipping it, that I don't think I'll go through this again. Basically, I haven't gotten the insurance on my ring yet, so the cost to overnight the ring via FedEx, along with the cost to insure the package and the stress it caused me because I was so paranoid about something happening to it was not worth it. If I have any issues again, I will be taking mine to a local jeweler I trust. I would rather pay someone a small fee here to fix my ring then have to go through everything I just did again. In fact, Mara told me that when she takes her ring to a local place (she didn't buy from them) that they do the inspections and little fixes for free. Not sure how common this is, but I don't think that places will charge much to give your ring a "tune up." Good luck! I'm going through this right now, and I got some wonderful advice on my thread if you want to check it out.

ETA: After reading surfgirl's posts, I think she has a good point, esp because Nordstroms does have excellent customer service. The issue for me is that my ring came through a family friend, so I don't really have any store or associated B&M to go to, but I also don't have any warranty that could be voided by going somewhere else.

Bri, your situation is totally different. If you had a store to go through, I''d have said the same thing to you. The difference here is that she should let Nordies take care of it so that it''s on them to make sure the item arrives safely to/from Kelege. In your case, unfortunately, you had to be the one to ship your ring back and I agree that that is a bit hairer to do yourself! I''d much rather a company deal with the shipping and let it be on them if something goes wrong...ya know?

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions. I realize that you are right- we bought this ring through Nordies and Kelege created it... it is more than worth it to send it back to get it just right. Besides, what is a week when I have the rest of my life to wear it? So, to Nordstrom I go this weekend and hopefully it will be a short turn around. It kills me that Kelege himself said it would be "ok" to wear it for even a month before I send it in but I am to nervous to do that. Gues I need a stand in? Won''t the finace love that!!!!
