1-carat round solitaire looks small

Curious to hear what your fiance thought of the ring!

Thank you all for your advice. I gave the ring to my girlfriend. She liked the ring at first. But when she found that it was a 1 carat F VS1, she would rather have a 1 carat diamond of lower color/clarity to save some money or get a larger diamond of lower color/clarity for the same money. She also commented that the diamond looked a bit dark for a F color diamond depending on lighting. Below is the handshot. I think the 1 carat is decent size for her hand. But I am also looking for a larger diamond (like 1.2 carat) for her before we decide whether to return this 1 carat. I don't see that much new inventory for Blue Nile Signature these few days though.

Sounds like a good idea--I would too personally.

I think going to an H SI1 or even I SI1 with a good depth between 60 and 61 could get you a really nice larger diameter stone. You could look at stones 1.23 - 1.30. I went from a 1.02 to a 1.23 and could really see a size difference. A larger stone will make those prongs look more delicate. Good luck on your search. I can't wait to see what you decide on.

If she already thinks the F looks dark I don't know about dropping in color.

Honestly, I think that has more to do with the cut than the color though.

Ditto. That's just what a well-cut RB *does* in some lights - it goes dark. Links below. There is no way the most eagle-eyed folk could see "yellow" in a reputably graded (GIA/AGS in the US) F without anything to compare to; it has nothing to do with the colour.

Yssie,

Thanks for posting those links. I've noticed that that happens with my "roval" in bright sunlight or under an OttLite and thought to myself that that's the penalty I pay for getting a "roval" instead of a round brilliant. I'm glad to see that "going dark" doesn't necessarily mean anything negative.

P.S. Don't mean to threadjack, OP. When I was looking at BN, that setting was one of my favorites, but not appropriate for ovals so I didn't look at it too closely.

I think the diamond looks very substantial on her hand. Objectively, diamonds are just small objects 8)

are you set on Bluenile?

the darkness she is describing probably isn't due to color. All diamonds go to a dark grey tone in certain lighting. There is threads about this if you do a search.

Thanks for all the replies about the diamond going dark and the diamond suggestions.

I am looking for a larger stone around 1.2 carat now. At the same time, I am trying to decide whether to get a different setting. My girlfriend likes simple solitaire setting. She does not like knife edge and therefore I bought from Blue Nile instead of Whiteflash or James Allen. We picked the 6-prong Petite Nouveau Solitaire Engagement Ring (http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-engagement-ring-setting-platinum_19009) originally because it was close to the Tiffany setting. Unfortunately, the prongs on the Petite Nouveau Solitaire seems to be a little too thick on the top and on the side for a 1 carat. So, we are not sure whether the Petite Nouveau Solitaire will work on the slightly larger 1.2 carat. We are trying to decided whether to get one of these 4-prong rings instead:

Classic Four Prong Engagement Ring

Petite Solitaire Engagement Ring

Petite Nouveau Solitaire Engagement Ring

Seeing it on her finger ---- it does look very good! Is she not happy with the stone as well as the setting or just setting only she'd like to change? I guess I missed that detail.

The suggestions all look amazing - good luck!

can't fluorescence actually help it from going dark (albiet will turn it blue in those situations instead)?

Blue Nile tends to have bigger prongs. You are right in that getting a 1.2 ct diamond won't fix the problem. (See the pictures below.)

You may want to ask if they could adjust the setting (ie file down the prongs) or go with a different vendor.

I think that going to a 1.2 carat and a classic 4 prong setting will look great if you want to stay with blue nile. I have seen both the petite Nouveau Solitaire prongs and the classic solitaire prongs and the classic prongs are smaller. The nouveau prongs covers more of the diamond which is giving the appearance of a smaller stone.

marygrace: Thanks for the setting comparison.

My GF still likes the Petite Nouveau Solitaire setting. So I bought a 1.27 carat G VS2 Blue Nile Signature at a little higher price instead. I have returned the 1.0.1 carat F VS1 already. So I can't compare them side by side. It does look a little bigger. I am going to give it to her on V-day. Thank you for all your advices.

Looks great!!

It looks perfect. I love that setting. You really did a great job balancing out your size, color and clarity. G VS2 is really nice, and 1.27 is an excellent size, the extra fullness of that extra .26 will look stunning. It will really look elegant on her hand. I can't wait til you post hand shots. I she will love it.

Beautiful- congrats!

Excellent choice! A 1.27 is going to be much better! And I think that is a very pretty setting! Just one question, though. Did you change the ring size this time? Because I could see in the picture of the first ring that it fit on her middle finger!

Good question. I didn't notice that. I ordered the same size 4.5 because she told me to. She wanted the ring a little loose. I will find out tonight. Thanks.

Great choice  I think she will like the bigger size and it is a beautiful setting

Yikes, I just don't want her to lose it! Most people wear a larger size on their middle finger. My e-ring definitely won't fit on my middle finger.

It definitely looks bigger! I hope she likes it.
