Hi All! Long time lurker...first time poster here. Warning: long winded, over explanatory post to follow.

I am **finally** getting a few jewelry projects finished/started/addressed as it is such a shame that I have some beautiful & sentimentally so important pieces just languishing in my jewelry box. See exhibit 1A below. As well, I will be posting in colored stones re: an emerald, and showing off in SMTB a 1ct mrb beauty I inherited when my grandmother passed that I just had bead set in a stuller bezel as a pendant (yay!!!! after 3yrs of also sitting in my box. boooo!!! My avatar is what that ring was...so now I have 2 cts of nice baguettes but alas that's yet another topic).

These earrings were given to me after the birth of my first son so they are sentimental to me. Unfortunately I do not EVER wear them. They were initially set in yellow gold baskets. I was in a "yellow gold is gross" stage so I had them re-set in white gold double bezel studs. After a very short time I started being bothered by the fact that my ear piercings are uneven and they point outward, not forward. Studs highlight this fact, so I had them put on lever backs. When I went to pick them up, they were way too long & I had them made a bit shorter. Alas, many years later, I still do not wear them because A) I don't think they hang right and B) I work from home & lets just say I am a "casual" dresser (read: I have only ever done yoga when I'm pregnant but have 20 assorted pairs of yoga pants) so I feel like this length of lever back seems a bit dressy.

Oh and studs aren't an option because for some reason my ears get sore/red when I wear studs now. Weird, I know...and I have tried different types of posts (first screwbacks, then non-screwbacks, then pousette (sp?)) on these while they were still studs.

Soooo...that makes: 2 settings, 3 post types, 2 variations of length of lever backs, and a jeweler bending them all around and I still don't wear them. Seriously all I wear are a pair of pawn store small thick gold hoops that were $80. I don't want to think about how much $ I have already spent on these settings, but for a probably $4k pair of sentimental diamonds I am willing to spend a bit more.

I'd like to wear them as earrings as I have a blingy wedding band & e-ring and as a RHR I wear a yummy high carat yellow gold trinity rolling ring made for me (and my sister) by my mom (I am back to loving yellow gold).

Suggestions on resetting or fixing the existing setting or other usage?

They are both 5.8mm h si1 faint blue flour, are matched well to my untrained eye, face up beautifully, and are very good performers.

P.s. HEARTFELT THANK YOU all for making this site so educational & approachable for someone like me who LOVES jewelry but just doesn't have a lot of technical knowledge nor lives close to any kind of jewelry store to try anything on or get ideas (with little kids it's not even a consideration unless I have a sitter & if I do...I'm getting a massage!!!!!!).

Those are lovely earrings! I have no suggestions on how to fix them, but I do hope you get them fixed.

I seem to recall someone - aljdeway? - working with one of the PS sponsors years ago to develop a great set of leverbacks to be used with dangly earrings i.e. with earring charm styles. Hmm....

I don't have time to find the thread, but I believe this is the lever back they came up with... trying to develop leverbacks that hang perfectly...

Well, it might just be the way your ears are pierced that they style just doesn't suit. My ears are that way. I can't wear leverbacks to save my life. Can you just take the posts off and have them replaced with stud posts and convert them to studs?

I think the earrings are KILLER as is -- my suggestion is to get some of those little clear plastic tubular things from Claire's or other junky fashion earring store/piercing place --- and use those to hold the levers in place. If you string them onto the wires & push them along until where the earrings look right when the plastic tube is right against your ear, the tension should hold them there all day. It's kind of a "back" for lever back or wire hook earrings. AND SUPER CHEAP! Like $1 for a pack of 10 -- or sometimes you can get them for free if you just ask. TRY IT -- you'll LIKE IT!

Think gravity will solve the problem if you set it into dangles with a chain rather than lever back, or as a charm as VRBeauty suggested

Thank you guys so much for the compliments as well as the helpful info/suggestions/threads to research.

Deco - I definitely am going to go find some of the plastic discs you recommended to try...sometimes the simplest fix just escapes me! :knockout:

First off, I love the earrings! I have a couple pair of danglies that just don't hang right due to gravity I think. The easy fix is to find a cheap pair of earrings that have those little white plastic thingies that hold the earrings onto the card. I put the earring on and then before I close the lever back I put one of those plastic thingies[wish I knew the name, lol] on behind my ear and then snug it tight. Then you can close the back. They don't move so they hold the earring in place so that it doesn't droop and you can't see the plastic thingies because they are behind you ears.

You have a gorgeous pair of diamonds!! Wow!!! I love cruising the DBL website and I went there just to show you these:
http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php/jewelry/yellow-diamond-earrings-48cts-w-x-vs1-round-brilliant-bezel-set-dangle-earrings-r4436

This design may not highlight the disparity between piercings and yet still allow your gorgeous bezels to have some movement. It looks like a comfortable wire and as perhaps they could rig up a light backing to keep them from slipping off. Although, it looks like the length is designed to prevent that.. if you have kids, I'm a big believer in the "better safe than sorry" school of thinking!

Update: I went by my local jeweler and he tried shortening/re-bending the earrings again. I really like the fact that they are shorter, but I still don't like how they hang. I had a few mins to review the threads re: lever backs and how problematic they are for many. I had no idea. If I wasn't so worried that I would have the same issue again, then Enerchi, 100% I would have them done like the Diamonds by Lauren bezel danglies! I am so in love with the designs on that website btw. Swoon re: the yellow diamonds. Yum :lickout:

I still need to find some of the plastic disc thingies to try and hold them up correctly (here's hoping) but I am thinking about having my ears re-pierced so that I can make them studs and actually have them point the proper way & maybe be even? I don't know if that is an option, but I am going to google it and see what I come up with. I imagine there are LOADS of women who got their ears pierced as babies and as adults wanted them re-done.

So here's pics...

They are pretty. Now it looks like your ear is setting in the curve of the hook. The only thing I can think of is the weight of the diamond part is causing the earring to move. I'm wondering if you could get those plastic earring backs and used that to keep the earring in place from behind. That is the only thing I can think of.

The things I'm thinking of are almost like tiny clear macaroni -- little tubes that slide over the wires yet are larger than the ear piercing & act as "stoppers". They could be used in combo with a disc type thing ... but it's their tension by gripping onto the wire tightly that helps them hold the earring in proper position.

Good luck!

I also am thinking what Deco is suggesting. To take it a step futher, I do use those when wearing lever back earrings. I have a dandling set of earrings and one earring slipped out of my ear while I was cleaning and luckily found it later on and since began putting the plastic slip-ons on the back. You probably can order a bunch of them from a jewelry supply store.

I wonder if the weight of the beautiful bezels is going to throw off the hang or drop, no matter what? Perhaps longer not shorter would stabilize them to be straighter?

Are you able to get in touch w David at DBL to just ask about that style?

Hopefully the discs others are talking about will help. They are gorgeous earrings it seems a shame not to wear them.

I think the little tiny "ribbed" earring things will help. If not feel free to ship em to me!! They are the prettiest dangly earrings I've seen. What I like about them is the are classic , clean lines. Casual for jeans(yoga pants) -dressy for dress up!!
Let us know if you get the earring backs!

If you want them to point a certain way, I would get rid of the leverbacks and just do the fishhook style like in the DBL picture. The hooks would have to be soldered at an angle, and you can't mix them up; each one will be oriented so that they only work on one specific ear.

This type of earrings always do that. I don't have solution but I think certain suggestions I read can help.

Each hook could be replaced with a hook that hangs at an angle so that when worn they face forward on your ears. Each ear would have it's own earring. I don't think anyone's earrings face forward unless their ears stick out from their head quite a way.

The weight of the earring (bezel) and the direction of your ear lobes are causing it to face downwards and towards the outside. You can still wear leverbacks (I love the comfort) but it will need modification. Have the bezel removed so that it is no longer fixed. Add a jump ring like shown in the DBL fishhook earring. Now that you have a little ring attached to the bezel, the angle of the bezel can be adjusted to face slightly upwards and towards your ear so that when worn, it will be facing straight towards the viewer. Problem solved! I know this because I've done this with all my leverback earrings.

Leverbacks do this a lot. A common solution is to slide a standard earring back onto the wire after you've got them on. I know it seem silly and it sort of defeats the purpose of the leverbacks but it moves where the wire fits in your ear.

Update: 1.5ctw lever backs don't hang right...or am I derang

Update to the update...

I finally looked at what Deco was talking about & MC linked to re: the plastic noodles. NOT the earring back plus plastic disc as I thought. So I got my hands on some and....VOILA! Hanging properly & can't even feel 'em! I am loving these earrings now for the past few weeks. Finally. :cheeky:

Many thanks for the suggestions, as I would probably have just shelved them for another few years if I hadn't tried this last TINY INEXPENSIVE DO IT YOURSELF fix.

So cheers & it feels like merry early christmas to me :)

Yay, glad those worked out for you. FWIW, having the plastic noodles on any lever back is SUCH a good idea for extra security.

Enjoy your earrings!

Yay! Love simple fixes!

Thanks Deco, Purple, & MC! I am super stoked & think they are just fabulous. I still can't pass a mirror!

As well a big THANK YOU to all the others who gave me such compliments and reminded me that it definitely is a shame not to continue trying to figure out how to make these work!

Related funny story: I got a text from a number I don't know at 5:30am that said "what kind of earrings do you have". Huh? The only person I know who is up communicating at that time is my DH so I called him to find out whose # it was. Turns out it is my good friend's DH. He & my DH are contractors and get up at a stupid time of day & are pals. I said call him back cuz I'm bewildered and going back to sleep. DH later told me long story short: After making him a 2 lb ribeye and 3 glasses of wine my friend standing at the sink after this lovely dinner says something like: "hmmmm....aren't <my name>'s earrings really great? Of course, I'll always love these you gave me 15 years ago. 15 years ago....hmmmm" She's about as subtle as a heart attack. So apparently he got the hint. I just texted him back "diamonds" he sent back "oh crap." HA! Happy shopping Dude!

hahaha That is funny! And, the best compliment ever. :))

Yay! I'm glad those worked for you. I have to use those with earrings any time i wear them, because I have a ripped earlobe and they always hang funny. The only thing that makes them look almost right are the plastic noodle thingies.

HI:

Great solution! I am going to use macaroni on my huggies!

cheers--Sharon

They look AMAZING on you!!! I love the length, the size, the bezel... its all a perfect combination working together like a beautiful symphony!! :praise: :appl:
