Newbie here, about to buy my first engagement ring and hopefully last. Here are the specs:

1.51 ct
clarity-vvs1
color-H
Measurements- 6.31-6.06x4.61
it is EGL certified. I have heard EGL is not the greatest certification. is this true? I have a 10k budget. This one is around 9,500
Is this a good price or should i be worried about the EGL certification?

Scratch that, just saw that you have a princess cut

Thanks for the help. i have no idea what i am looking at so any help is useful

I wouldn't buy an egl h. I wouldn't trust the color. They can be off the GIA color by 2-3 shades. And a princes shows more color than a round. So if it's really like a J, that'll show a lot of color. Have you looked at Whiteflash.com? They have cuts called a cut above for princesses that would work. I'm on my phone right now but they have a ACA 1.45 ct h vs1 for a ps wire price of 9500

It's hard to tell...do you have any other specs? like depth and table size etc? I wouldn't spend that much money on getting a VVS1 or 2. Although if size isn't as important then ok...Do you have a picture of the stone?

I found a couple more:

Good Old Gold - I'd call them and see what the price is, and tell them your budget and they'll work with you:

AS FAR AS IT BEING EGL - I would ask to see a picture compared to a different stone, maybe a GIA certified stone or see it in person. EGL USA grades better and can be on the mark. You just need to do your homework. You pay less for EGL, but just make sure it's what you want...You can get a great deal if you do your research!

The EGL memo may not reflect an accurate assessment of the colour and clarity compared to a GIA memo, which is why it costs less than a comparable GIA diamond. With princess cuts, pictures and an ASET is a must because the numbers tell next to nothing about the light performance (sparkle).

We can't say much about the stone without seeing pictures and preferably an ASET image. Princess cuts vary so much in facet patterning and cut quality that it's nearly impossible to make any judgment based on numbers.

All I can tell you is:
1) The stone is off-square at 6.31x6.06. You are likely to notice this as the square ratio is 1.04. I prefer a more square stone.

2) Unless you are specifically looking for high clarity, VVS1 is a bit of overkill, and you can get the same look with an accurately graded (GIA or AGS) eye-clean SI1 or at least VS2 for less money. That said, I like high clarity too and have a VVS2.

3) You're right that EGL is known to be soft on color and clarity. Your H/VVS1 might come back as a J/VS1 by GIA. They are particularly soft on color, and this is a color range where I wouldn't want to risk an inaccurate grade because H/I/J is where people can usually pick up a hint of color in a princess. Personally I wouldn't choose an EGL-graded stone for an engagement ring because of that. If you do, get it appraised by an independent appraiser before you set it so you can know the true color and clarity. And buy from a vendor with a good return policy in case it wasn't what you're looking for. EGL-USA is the least inaccurate of the EGL labs, so if your stone is graded by EGL-USA, you may be comfortable with that.

I don't like the faceting on the JA one, and the GOG one is over $18k! You just hit "reserve diamond" to see the price, then be sure to use the trash can icon to remove it from your virtual cart.

I would for sure put that on hold its the only ACA in your budget H or above

Outstanding stone and very rare size at just under 1.5 cts. Much better shape than the one you posted originally as well as top cut quality.

This is a great illustration of how people get ripped off buying EGL stones. That stone may be J VS1 and not worth anywhere near what the WF stone is for the same price.

Ha, good to know! The aset on the WF stone is perfection!

I don't want to sound like a I beating a dead horse but contact them to holding ASAP. You are under no obligation to buy, but infill keep any lurkers from seeing everyone gush over it and snatch it out from under you.
