I''ve been looking at a 1.5 ct and a 1.7.

Both stones are J in color and I1''s. Stone #1 is eye clean for the most part (by my own definition which I''m comfortable with- as I can''t see the inclusion), I am waiting to find out about Stone #2 (for now lets go on the assumption that they are equal in clarity- otherwise my decision will be made.)

Both stones score a 1.6 on the cut adviser- however, their scores land them in different areas on the chart. I''m not sure this makes a difference and I don''t think I have a full understanding of the chart.

Stone #1
1.5 ct
7.36 x 7.39 x 4.54
Round Brilliant
AGS cert cut grade 0
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Table: 56.6
Depth: 61.6
Crown angle: 34.5
Pavilion angle: 40.9

Stone #2
1.7 ct
7.64 x 7.69 x 4.67
Round Brilliant
GIA Cert cut grade: Very Good
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Table: 59
Depth: 60.9
Crown Angle: 34.5
Pavilion angle: 40.6

Which one would you pick? Will I see a size difference?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi JR,

Going on the info given, I would pick the first one. I like all the numbers, and the AGS0 grade. (I''m assuming this is a newer report with light grading?)

There is definitely a difference in size, but it''s not humongous. The first will face up at a very nice and noticable size. And I would personally always pick the smaller, better cut, over a larger, not as great cut.

Ditto, I would pick the first for sure with info provided.

Sorry for the threadjack but AGS now has light grading, WoW, I am impressed!?!?!

I would go for the 1st one too since it is Ideal!!

The AGS report is from 2006. It says:

Cut Grade: AGS Ideal 0
Light Performance: 0
Proportion Factors: 0
Finish: 0

Is this what you are referring to?

Does anyone have some sort of picture that shows the size difference (I know this is obsessive. Maybe I''ll try to draw it out.)

Yes! That''s a good thing.

And I see Skippy hooked you up with a size chart. Thanks Skippers.

There are charts which show size differences, but some experts advise cutting the sizes out in paper circles to get an idea - although not completely accurate, it may be helpful.

BTW that is not obsessive, I have done it meself!

Thanks for the size chart! Super helpful. I''m waiting for idealscope images on both stones. This might take a day or two. I will probably post them on here after I get them- maybe you guys will have some more input then too!

Thanks for your help. I think as of now I''m leaning toward the 1.5.

Hopefully some idealscopes are on the way.

Can''t wait to see the idealscopes, but I''m with the crowd on this one. #1 for me, especially with that AGS 0 grade.

I''d take an AGS000 over a GIA very good cut hands down. :) Side by side, you would notice a difference in the 2 cuts most likely. I''m very happy with my 1.59 J SI2 AGS000, I don''t think you''d notice much difference with a difference of only 0.3mm approximately. And the superior cut of stone #1 would probably make up the difference.

Question for you all...

If both of the stones scored a 1.6 on the cut adviser... why does the AGS have an ideal 0 grade, and the GIA have a very good?

The HCA only goes by the few numbers it is given. It is just a "predictor", it doesn''t "see" the actual diamond. It doesn''t know that the second stone only got Good for Symmetry, and VG for Polish, which would knock it out of AGS0 ideal range. Also, GIA rounds those crown and pavillion #''s, so I''m not sure what they truly are.

A good score is not an automatic buy. After you get a good score, you then need to get more info on it. In this case however, you have enough to know you should keep looking (if this were the only one you were looking at).

Yes, the first stone has higher grades in several areas, so I don''t see much contest unless the inclusions are a problem on #1.

I have a picture of two stones that are 7.6mm and 7.25mm in case that might help you.

JR3116, did you decide on a stone yet?

Haven''t decided yet! My brain hurts. I''m waiting for one of the idealscope images.

I did notice that I posted a mistake though.

The 1.7 ct is an I colored stone, and the 1.5 is a J.
