Knowing step cuts as I do, you will definitely be able to tell.
But here's the thing. Don't take my word for it... or anyone's. Can you order them both and return the one you don't love? Cause that's what I'd do if I had the flexibility.
Step cuts have such individual personalities. JA will send you a holder with them. And they pay shipping both ways.
I'm in Chicago too, so you buy it and we'll do a timeshare! Your fiancee can wear it every weekend and I get it Mon-Fri
She can wear anything of mine while I have her diamond
Joking aside, step cuts are very hard to pick. I would love to upgrade mine and am actively searching but can't decide between another EC or an asscher. I have ordered two other ECs, one for a pendant & one for a potential upgrade & neither had anywhere near the performance of my current stone. I'm actually scared to let my current 1.11 go because I think of it as a needle in a haystack.
So if you found a great performing diamond in an extremely favorable color and size, I say go for it. She will love it forever
Decided on the 1.74 F VS1, will post pictures when it comes in.
My mind was all over the place this weekend from looking at lower performing cheaper options, to considering GOG given some of the fantastic work they've done for others but in the end I couldn't stop looking at this one. Obviously I can return it if it doesn't meet expectations but I'm excited.
I'll research settings and may come back here with more questions, I'm dead set on a solitaire and I know my initial thought is I want something that shows off as much of the stone as possible. The setting Gypsy posted looks really nice and I've also been drawn to some of the double claw options that have been posted on this forum. Thank you everyone for your input!
Oh, and if you like the setting I posted for you earlier. I highly recommend working with Steven Kirsch who is in NY for the setting, he can make you a similar setting, handforged for strength and durability. You don't want less than a 2mm shank. You can just send him that link, ask for a 2mm shank width and ask for a quote in platinum.
I suggest you leave the wedding band choice up to her. She may want a pave or other diamond band for herself, which would be lovely with her solitaire.
I'm so excited to hear your impression of the diamond! Please post pictures. I think a simple solitaire will be perfect.
Love Gypsy's setting suggestions. I have been to Dimend Scassi. They have a great reputation.
Just got the thing back from Dimend Scaasi and holy crap does the thing sparkle. Far more than any asschers I've seen in person at jewelry stores.
I was having 2nd thoughts about spending as much as I did but those immediately went away when I saw the finished product. I'll post pictures within the next few days but thank you to everyone on here for your advice (special thanks to Gypsy for lots of advice)!
Oh I am so excited. Please take a TON of pictures. I really loved the asscher AND the setting and I'm so excited for you! I am thrilled you are happy with it! That matters most of all!
Thanks for coming back with the pictures! I was wondering how your ring turned out. I hope your FI loves it, that setting is so perfect with your asscher I love that stone
What a stunner! Makes me want to change mine to a solitaire .. ok, that might not be 100% true.. it should be "makes me want to get another asscher to set it in solitaire!
Congrats on your engagement and again, it's a spectacular ring! Thanks for sharing..
Yes, she loves it, definitely was what she was hoping for so thanks to everyone who helped out with the purchase! We went back to Dimend Scaasi this week and picked out a simple thin french pave wedding band to go with it. We both like the solitaire look so didn't want anything that would draw too much attention from that. Now we're just hoping her finger size doesn't change toooooo much in the summer. The engagement ring is a size 7 which is definitely too big but ended up getting the band in a 6.25. We'll eventually get the e-ring re-sized but she doesn't want to part with it for a couple days.
