So I am in the process of looking at engagement rings and I am in love with emerald cuts! Unfortunately, I don''t have a very large budget and have been looking up diamond prices and I think I could handle a well cut emerald that is .5 ct. Does anyone have any pictures of emerald cuts around that size? I haven''t been shopping in person that often as of yet so it would be nice to at least have an idea. Thanks!!

My avatar is a .55 ct EC. I really like it.

here's a .61 emerald. it's got a huge table and is almost 2:1 in ratio. it's a very shallow diamond, so probably bigger in dimensions that you'll get from a better stone...

but i think it's very pretty. do be aware, tho, that a wedding ring doesnt sit flush with this design, and wearing a wedder which doesn't sit flush with this type of stone will put the diamond at risk of wear.

i do love these sized rings tho, so good luck and keep us informed of your journey :)

ETA this is Ellen's ring, made from a stone previously belonging to her mother. the proportions might not be perfect, but i love the setting and think it makes a very elegant ring.

Here it is on my hand. I wear a size 6 ring.

Whitby and Marcy I love both of your rings! Thanks for the pictures. Please for give me though...I''m a little unsure with some of the terminology. What exactly is the importance of the table? Also, what did you mean about a wedding ring not sitting flush with the design and a wedder? Sorry I''m a little new! Thanks a lot

sorry jessnriley - i should have said right off the bat - this is not my ring. this ring belongs to a poster called Ellen and this stone was originally her mother's. (i have now edited the original post to clarify)

all rings have certain proportions which give a better cut than others. good cuts give good light return, which is what makes your stone sparkle and show up as 'bright'. if the proportions are 'off' all sorts of things can go wrong; they can look dark, they can look dull, or grey, they can lack sparkle, they can look lifeless and 'flat', and so on.

in the opinion of the woman who originally posted this ring (and i would take her word on this because she knew what she was talking about) the table is too large. the table is the top facet of the ring - the big, flat surface area on top.

jessnriley, there's lots of tutorials on here about cut for the various shaped diamonds. it would stand you in good stead to look up a few and find some guidelines for emerald cuts. that way you'll make sure you get the sort of stone that best suits your needs. alternatively, you can work with a company that will do the work for you and will source you good stones. good old gold, white flash or brian gavin diamonds spring to mind.

a wedder sits flush with an engagement ring when there's no gap between the two, when the e-ring stone protrudes like it does with an emerald cut stone, unless it's set in a particular way (higher so it doesn't sit right down on your finger), the stone in the e-ring precludes the wedding ring from snuggling up nice and close, so you end up with a gap between the two. the wedding ring also can bump against the stone, since it's not sliding under it, and can cause problems with wear (like chips etc)

hope this helps!

When I was looking for my EC I did a search and read through all the threads I could find. There are several EC experts here who will help you too. I picked mine out in person and I looked at quite a few before one of them really stood out to me. I agree with Whitby about finding a wedding ring that might set well or look right with an EC ring but I am sure you would find something you like.

I love emerald cuts in this carat weight.

Super helpful Whitby and Marcy!! Thanks a lot!
