Hi guys,

This is my first post on here and I recently discovered this website, so I haven''t gotten the chance to comb through all the different topics. I wanted to get your opinion on this.

So, I''ve had my engagement ring for about 4 years now. It''s a 3 stone princess cut with a 1.02 center G VS1 GIA certified and the sides are G VS1 too I believe. It''s set on a plain platinum band. Well, when I was originally looking at engagement rings 4 years ago, I really liked the 3 stone, but I wanted the side stones to be MUCH smaller than the center stone... not to the point where it would just be a really tiny sidestone setting, but enough to where the middle diamond pops out. Anyways, not only did it not turn out the way I wanted it to turn out, the way the jeweler made the setting has caused the diamond to be permanently loose. According to another jeweler, the diamond won''t fall out, but if you just tap the ring you can definitely hear a diamond shaking.

So anyways, I lived with the ring for 4 years, but now especially cause of the instability of the current setting, I really wanted to change it. I also kind of wanted to upgrade my diamond.

4 years ago, we obviously paid a lot more for the diamond and now if we go and sell it or trade it in we are getting much less, but I think also we are getting a cheaper bigger stone than we would have back then so it kind of balances out.

However, my husband and I have a goal of not spending more than 2k if possible... maaaaaaaaybe 3k, but so far the diamonds we have seen in our price range are lower end 1.5s and I''m not sure that''s a big enough difference to upgrade or if it''s worth going down to and I or J from my current G and SI1 from my current VS1.

I really wanted a 2.00 carat and based on what I have been reading in these forums, there are some really nice J diamonds that look really pretty and are much cheaper because they are J.

Do you guys think that we could find a nice diamond in the 2carat range for the amount we are looking to spend (after trade in)?

If not, do you think it''s worth it to even upgrade to the 1.5 or should I just change my setting and use my current diamond and make a pendant or something with the other stones?

Sorry for my long message. I am just SUPER confused. We wanted something by our anniversary which is in December but now I''m thinking we won''t have it in time... it would be nice to get it pretty soon though.

Let me know what you guys think! Thanks!

BTW- what''s most important to me:

1. I definitely don''t want it to be yellow looking
2. Don''t want to see any flaws from the naked eye.
3. I like fiery diamonds

Are you confident you will be able to sell your original center stone? Have you verified that with a vendor? Because the difference between a 1ct and 1.5ct usually is more than $2k. Are you upgrading with your original jeweler? It sounds like your jeweler did not do a very good job on the design or workmanship of your setting.

So I think you need to figure out what your real budget would be if you moved up to a 1.5ct. Are you open to buying on the internet?

Your side stones would make lovely studs!

This so just wrong. The diamond should never be shaking in the setting in a well made and set stone. That is a very poor jeweler and he is trying to cover up his mistake.

I am thinking it is better to use the money on a new setting with smaller side stones. The size increase for well cut princess is not much for that carat increase.
