Hi all

Would it be a good price to pay approx. $3k or less for this 0.7ct GIA 3x H VS2 diamond that has already been set into a ring with a small halo around it?

GIA 2185720356

Thank you all for advice!

It's a fair price at retail (I check against BlueNile). If you are buying it second hand then no.

It would have been nice to see an aset or idealscope image of this stone. Its pretty good though.

Look at it in different lighting and make sure that it sparkles nicely in most lighting.

You can use the Search bar at the top of the forum to compare prices across the Pricescope-recommended vendors.

depends on the stone. What are the specs? If it is a poorly cut GIA XXX then it wouldn't be worth it to me. But for a good one then yes. And agree that it is good for retail (if well cut), but not for 2nd hand.

The specs look nice... did you run through HCA?
Has the stone been previously owned? If so, you should have the stone re-graded by GIA to make sure it has not incurred any damage to the stone. This will require it being unmounted and sent in. Alternatively, you could take it to a certified appraiser if you have a return period and have it inspected by them and see what they say. Obviously, they can only do so much given the stone is already mounted, but they should be able to give you a fairly good eval.
Do you have a photo of the ring?

Thank you all for your replies. It’s a second hand. I’m not in the US and from my country we can’t get very well priced diamonds. Or maybe I don’t know where to look. Let me see if I can get a photo here. Don’t think I can get Aset or images.

A lot of people come here who are not in the US so if you want to say your general location there are people here who can give you resources.

a screen grab, not too good with these things.

It's a very pretty set from what I can see from the photo, obviously it's not a detailed viewing of the diamond. Do you know if the band and the ring fit flush? Does the price include the matching band?

Price includes the matching band. I’m guessing they sit flush since the seller is selling as a set.

I wouldn't just assume that they fit flush. I would ask for a photo of it on a finger to make sure.

Did you run the proportions through the HCA tool on this website?

I’m very nervous about buying second hand. The person said original receipt no longer available. Did show me a picture of GIA cert.

The HCA is fantastic!
So they do or do not have the GIA report to give you?
Can you post a picture of the GIA report? That would be helpful.

This is what I found online. Yes seller has the report.

The report says that the diamond has been inscribed with the GIA report #, this is good as you would have a way to verify that the diamond matches to that report (minus any damage that could've possibly occurred to the stone since it was graded but let's put that aside). Is there an option for return and refund if, for example, you take it to an appraiser to verify?

If all checks as stated, I think it is a nice stone and nice mounting and band. When you first mentioned the price, some here said that they thought it would be too much for a resale, but I don't think they knew the band was included. Also, I don't think they realized you are in a more isolated location, from what you've described.
What about sizing? Do you know what size these rings are? Because you can only size up and down so much when you have rings with stones going down the shanks.

Be sure there are no damages to the stone.

Ask to look at the GIA laser-etched number on the girdle of the stone to ensure it is the stone that goes with the report.

Thanks all for your help! I will think over getting it. It’s an individual selling the set, there will be no refund opportunity. Have a good weekend all.

You could look for a qualified, independent appraiser (not one who works in a jewellery shop or who sells things) and ask if you can use them as an escrow service.

They could inspect the stone, confirm it is what it is supposed to be, and then pass the money to the seller if all is good.
