Custom Cutting a Tiffany Cut Engagement Ring

I am on the hunt for an engagement ring to present to my girlfriend. When we have previously shopped for diamonds, she had expressed interest in the Tiffany True engagement ring and not much else. I am not keen on paying the Tiffany markup and would rather get a larger stone for the money. I am aware this is a very new cut, so finding one second hand seems unlikely. It doesn't appear that the cut is patented though, so perhaps someone knows of someone who could custom cut the stone? Any suggestions on a similar cut? Have seen more modified cushions and aschers that are close, but she is really set on the Tiffany cut. I am a total newbie to diamonds, so I really appreciate any help or advice!

1. You aren’t going to find anyone willing to infringe on a Tiffany trademark. If it’s a specialty Tiffany shape/faceting then the only place you’ll get it is from Tiffany. Also, the diamond itself is only half the story - the Tiffany True setting has a very specific aesthetic as well.
2. Many women who want branded pieces want more than just the piece - they want the brand association as well. Most women are also aware that branding will eat into budget. Would your girlfriend be happier with a larger non-Tiffany ring or a smaller Tiffany ring? Note that I’m specifically asking what she would prefer, not your own preference :))

As yssie said, to some people it is the Tiffany name, the blue box, the ribbon that counts - full stop. And if that’s what her heart is set on, please don’t try and “re create” the Tiffany ring, it’s just not the same. Not even close.
It’s way too much money to spend for it not to be the ring of her dreams.

Yeah agreed - find out if it's the BRAND she wants or is open to a similar style before you buy anything!

Thanks for the quick responses! We have actually spoken about it a few times and she has assured me she does not care about the brand name (and actually doesn't like the setting)-she just really likes the cut! She also expressed some interest in similar cuts like the Tiffany Lucida (which I believe has an expired patent) and the Lucere cut. Looking for suggestions on where to find one of these cuts or if any of them can be custom made. Thoughts?

I’ve seen a True up for resale. If I were you, I’d email the owner at Blue Chip Jewelry (largest Tiffany engagement ring resale site) and see what he can find for you. He has many more rings in stock than what he lists on the website at any given time.

Preloved. Alternatively, I think something like this is probably closest:

Edit - step cut with very unique faceting (and also a specialty cut), if it’s the stepped crown she likes:

You might also look at radiants. Most of them have somewhat mushy centers but there are some that have distinct faceting and have the cut corners like
True. You will really need and aset image for radiants to make sure they are returning light well.
Here are a few examples...

If you share more details of what you're looking for PSers can help you search (color, clarity, budget, etc). Also, since you wont be getting
the "True" cut you might want to bring your GF in on it before you buy so you know whether the cut of the stone is what she likes or not,
or just make sure you buy from a vendor that has a good return policy in case she doesnt like the cut. Aset images are pretty important for these
type of stones so try to work with a vendor that can get them.

I think it is important to understand that your SO likes branded cuts and therefore you either have to look for those preloved, accept the premium that comes with the brand or look for something else that might resemble the cut but fundamentally will be different. I have seen the T&Co True cut in person and it is lovely. That is not to say that your SO won’t like another cut corner shape like a radiant or an asscher.

HOF also has a branded cut called Dream. Their stones retail at a huge premium that I don’t necessarily find it worth it, but here is one listed on eBay: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/273327133945

It sounds like it may not be the branded cut necessarily but the combination of geometric shape + brilliant sparkle. I agree it's important to understand what it is she likes about these stones so you can go about getting her something she'll enjoy...good luck!

Agreed. Sounds like the brand isn't the issue. I would 100% have her look at the brian gavin H&A cushions. They are gorgeous, and have a similar look to the tiffany true (at least to my eyes).

This exactly sums it up!

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone, you are the best! Seems like "cloning" the Tiffany cut is not possible. I have contacted Blue Chip to see if there are second-hand options. Have looked at some Octavias in person, but they were quite small and I couldn't realistically appreciate what it would look like in a higher weight. Maybe one of the above places might have something larger to see. I looked into the Brian Gavin Hearts and Arrows, seems very close to what I'm looking for. Any ideas where I could see one in person?

As far as specs I'm looking for: Solitaire, Step Cut Crown with Brilliant Pavilion, 2-3 carat, E/F/G color, VS1/VS2, budget $25-35k.

You won't be able to see the BG H&A in person unless you are in Texas and can visit the store. Unfortunately it's a branded cut, and they only have 1 location. But their return policy is very good, so you could always order the stone to see in person and then return if you aren't happy. I'm sure they could accommodate that request.

@jewwithguitar you have a very generous budget which will allow you to get a sizable diamond. I had a BGD cushion in the past so I am sharing some pics. Mine was a 1.56ct J color.

I looked through their inventory and this stone would be my pick for you. https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...141-g-vs2-cushion-diamond-ags-bl-104101952024 The G color in combination with the medium flouro will face up very white while leaving plenty of budget for setting, band, etc.

BGD have a great return policy. I have purchased from them multiple times and have returned some stones as well. Returns were always very easy.

Not so,
Myself and Yoram are the sole designers of the Octavia asscher based on a basic 3c/3p asscher facet structure from Mr Asscher's patent in 1902.
Jon did play a part in bringing them to market while he was at GOG.

I see, thank you for explaining this Karl and I apologize for my misunderstanding!
