I would appreciate everyone's thoughts on this diamond. I'm still learning, but know the table % is too much. And does "chip" actually mean there is a visible chip in the stone? If the price was right, would it be worth a look or should I keep searching?

Nah. Pass. I wouldn't look at any GIA unless it was graded trip Ex. And even then you have to do some more investigative work.

This is your friend for filtering out GIA EXEXEX stones and sometimes VG stones

Btw, if you KNOW the table is too much, why even second guess yourself?

It gets a 5.5 on the HCA, it's a booger. Keep looking!

Wow, great info...thanks!

I thought it was a dog, just wasn't sure if it would be a bargain at $10K.

Thanks again.

Look for a diamond that's got 55-58 table and 60-62 depth. There is much more to it like pavilion and crown angles, but that's the first place to start. A lot of Pricescopers here like to use the HCA tool as a way to identify potential stones. If the diamond scores less than a 2, it's worth pursuing further. In lay men's terms, the HCA tool takes into consideration the angles of the diamond to ensure it's cut for optimal light return. The next step is viewing the diamond to make sure the numbers match the physical appearance of the diamond.

Travelgal...thanks for the info!

I've bookmarked the HCA tool and will use it on everything I look at.

Trying to find a diamond for a Christmas engagement :)

Ditto previous posters...

Diamonds sold at retail are priced for what they are - you aren't going to find any "great deals" wherein you gain without sacrificing in some other aspect.

In this case the sacrifice is cut quality.

Here are some decently-cut examples in that price band:

A 1.57ct G SI2 branded H&A (with inclusions that would most certainly not meet my personal definition of "eyeclean IRL") - $11k

An unbranded 1.59 K SI1 that looks promising in the still pic (the crystal(s) at 8o'clock look prong-able, especially if you choose a 6-prong setting) - $8.6k

A 1.72 J SI1 that most likely benefitted from the fact that clarity grading is done face-up (the black crystals blend against the obstructed pavilion mains close-up, but may be more visible from further away/at slight tilt) - $10.4k

A 1.5 I SI1 that may or may not be clean to your definition IRL - $10.5k

A very promising 1.5ct I VS2 GIA-VG (there are a few varieties of proportions that will be demoted to VG but that may nonetheless result in stones that are well worth considering) - $10.9k

A very promising 1.35 I VS1 GIA-EX - $9.6k

An interesting 1.92 K SI2 - $10.5k

ETA: I am NOT suggesting that you shortlist - or worse, buy! - any of these selections without getting more information!! I posted them only to illustrate the fact that given a certain price range you'll have various options and you'll have to decide what to prioritise - and what to sacrifice. On PS we strongly advise sacrificing very little on cut quality because that's the primary factor determinant of whether or not the diamond sparkles. Give us your priorities and budget if you'd like us to help you look for stones.
