Your Opinions on This Loose Pear Diamond

Hi Everyone,

I have been looking for a loose pear diamond of around 4 carat, G-H color, and VS2 to SI1 clarity as the center of an engagement ring. A jeweler that I spoke with found a diamond in the range.

I have attached a picture of the diamond as well as the GIA report. Does it seem like a good diamond? I am mostly concerned about the cut and if it is brilliant. As I understand, it is hard to tell the brilliance of a fancy cut just through numbers alone, but is there anything I should watch out for based on the report? The table, crown, pavilion are ok?

Should I ask for an ASET? (just learned what it is, tx pricescope)

One more thing I am concerned about: my vendor straight up told me that he needs to make a $2000 profit on this stone. He found the diamond from another vendor. My question is, if he buys the stone from another vendor, would I be paying for the profit of the other vendor and him? Or would do diamond vendors earn very little profit when they sell between each other? Would I save money by finding a diamond myself without a vendor's help?

Thank you all for being so patient with all my questions. It seems like the more I research, the more I need to research. I appreciate any feedback.photo__1__7.jpg photo_141.jpg

In essence, yes. As the diamond passes through any person in line and changes hand, everybody has to make a profit out of it. All of this is reflected in the prices that the end consumer sees.

You should request an ASET but not everybody would be able to provide it. The grading report by itself is pretty much useless in determining the cut performance of a stone. I would say that there aren't obvious red flags based on the report alone.

For a 4 carat diamond and the costs involved, you should be doing your research carefully.

I agree with everything that DLA said. You may consider checking with Good Old Gold as well. They can do all the additional testing on the diamond that will help determine it's light performance, if your vendor can not. I should also mention that as diamonds increase in size, so do the size of the allowable inclusions when graded for clarity. Many SI1 stones would be considered eye clean, but at this ct weight it becomes less likely that it will be. Also color is more obvious and graded (I'm not able to locate where I read this, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong) differently than stones with smaller ct weight.

Thank you guys. I will definitely ask my vendor for an ASET. I'm visiting him this afternoon.

I'm a bit confused about the pricing for diamonds. It seems like there is a $10k range for diamonds of the same H color and SI1 clarity, with very good symmetry and polish. Is there a way to know what a diamond is actually worth?

Also, I was told that all pears have bow ties. Is that true?

Thank you!
