Finally considering a pair of 2ct x 2 diamond studs. Here are the GIA reports. My local jeweler says they are H&A's but I am not sure. What do you think of these?

H&A with a crown angle of 33.5 degrees offset by a pavilion angle of 41.2 degrees?!?! Uh, yea... And the other stone has a crown angle of 34.5 degrees offset by a pavilion angle of 40.0 degrees! Oh please ask the vendor for pictures of these diamonds as seen through a Gems Fantasy Scope! I can''t wait to see what this retail jeweler considers to be a crisp and complete pattern of Hearts & Arrows!

Could be ok, but I sure would like them to be closer in angles. Probably not H&A. If he claims it to be, ask him to show you the hearts image.

LOL! Ditto! I very much doubt these are h&a cuts, and from the proportions you can do much better. Cut quality is so important even for earrings as without they won't sparkle and look how you want them to.

Thanks Stonecold for putting up the GIA reports. Did not know I was not supposed to send links.

OK what kind of angles should I be looking for in a H&A? I have tried reading some tutorials etc. but if someone can please educate me a little in layman''s language I would really, really appreciate it! Thanks!

Here are some numbers you can use as a guide to help you find a well cut round diamond. However hearts and arrows is a type of strict precision cut, if that is what you are looking for is a h&a diamond then I would suggest you contact the following vendors who all sell beautiful h&a diamonds. Basically the proportions are extremely important in order for you to have a beautiful diamond, but the overall cut precision is crucial if you want superb h&a patterning, and images particularly of the hearts from the underside of the diamond are imperative. Really it is easier to go with one of the vendors below to get a h&a diamond, also you can find some well cut diamonds may show a strong arrow pattern and hearts but do not meet the standards as stated by experts. Often the hj&a diamonds will also be AGS0 cut grade, some of which can fall within the numbers suggested below.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

From expert John Pollard.

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).
