Hello All, first post here. I''m not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes!

My boyfriend and I are shopping for an engagement ring. I have medium size hands (glove size 7, ring size 4.5 or 5.5, I can''t remember which!). He likes a 1.63 carat round stone, but I wonder if it is too large. I''m a surgeon, so I''ll be taking my ring off for surgical scrubs about every other day, that doesn''t bother me, but I want to have something that I wear every day and all the time when I am able to at work. I am wondering if I would be more comfortable with a smaller stone, like 1.0 or 1.3 or so. I realize that we are talking 1-1.5 mm in diameter difference, but wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. I usually don''t wear much jewelry, although sometimes I wear a pearl ring that measures about 6-7mm in diameter and that seems fine in size and not too flashy.

My mom had a 1/4 carat stone for 35 yrs, and my sister in laws each have 1.0 or 1.2 carats (though they''ve added side stones since). So that''s what I''m sort of used to seeing. We are looking at a solitaire for me. I don''t know if I''m the only woman who wants (or thinks she wants) a smaller stone, but thought I''d see what other people think! If anyone has any words of wisdom....I just am afraid of getting something too big or flashy.

I can tell you one thing--you're going to get a lot of "WHAT? There's no such thing as too big, silly!" responses here on PS. We seem to have a nearly collective case of DSS (Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome) around here.

Anyway, I recommend trying on some rings in real life to see which diamond size you prefer. I wear a 2.01 ct cushion set on an eternity band, so I I'm certainly not one to say that the diamond in question is too big.

As for something being too flashy, I think that's all in the details. If you have a lovely, tasteful setting then the ring is not going to look flashy (in my opinion, of course).

What an exciting time! Go out, try on some rings, and take pictures to share with us!

OHMYGOSH, I am the absolute WRONG person to respond to your question!

I am a shameless SIZE girl, and I''d be wearin'' a 5 carater if the blasted budget would allow, and I am not kidding! As it is, I wear a 2.36 RB on a size 4.75 finger and the darn thing is still shrinking right before my eyes!

Seriously, concentrate on *cut*, that is what makes a diamond sparkly and beautiful. After that, balance the other C''s (color, clarity, carat weight) to get the perfect stone for you.

But really... can a beautiful, well-cut, killer diamond ever be too big??? Methinks *NOT*!!!!

I asked admin to move this to Rocky Talk. That''s the right place for it. And WELCOME!!!!

Hi there. I''m also in the medical field and use gloves frequently. I wear a 6 1/2 to 7 in gloves and have a 5.25 - 5.5 ring size (I like my rings to be a tad loose) so I know what you''re talking about with rings. I had a problem with my 1 carat solitaire ripping through gloves. I don''t think it''s the size of the stone so much as how high or low it''s set. I had mine reset into a low setting and it resolved 90% of my problems. You don''t need to go as low as bezel set, but a traditional six prong is probably not going to work for you. If you''re doing a solitaire have your future hubby tell them to set it as low as possible that will still fit flush with a wedding band. If you want side stones please stay away from a pave setting. The medical field is a death sentence for those tiny stones. I think you can get a stone as big or small as you want as long as it''s set properly for your line of work. Don''t worry about carat size and how it will look to others. You''re the one wearing it forever so YOU need to be happy and comfortable with the size, whether it''s three carats or a half carat. Good luck and keep us updated!

Welcome to PS!!!

I wear about a 5 1/2 and my diamond is exactly 1.63 carats! My sisters and sisters-in-law all wear about 1 to 1.2 cts., too! If you want to see a few pictures of mine, I''ll add the link to my thread with my new rings for you. My stone was set by Leon Mege, and it is set very low.

I think that you might regret not going with that size stone from the outset. Certainly as a surgeon, people would not think it was over the top for you to wear a stone that size. I am also size conscious, though. I wore a 1 ct. for years so it was an adjustment to go to 1.6. But I think it is really a great size, not too small and not too big. I have no desire for a larger stone at all, which is not very common on this forum!

(I hope you''ll check out Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash for their high quality diamonds while you''re shopping. I really couldn''t find anything locally that compared to what they carried and the prices were better, too!)

I say go for the 1.63, provided it''s an ideal cut, of course! You''ll get used to it VERY quickly...just ask Lynn B!
