...your boss tells you to surf the internet for awhile.

I hate slow days! I never know what to do with myself.

Do you work someplace where they just send you packing for the day if you run out of work?

Nope, ''cause the minute they let us leave the world comes crashing down

Me too. I look on PS, Facebook and then browse puppy cams on ustream :) I actually set up one to watch my own dog. LOL hours of fun.

NO...I always have way too many things to do at work. And if I DON'T, then I should be coming up with inventive ways to have my programs exceed revenue goals even further.

I man a phone, so even if I''m out of sidework, I still have to be here!

I work on my resume and job hunt when there''s no work, or come on PS

I have never had a job that when you were done you could leave. We always had/have to wait around in case something to do come up.

I had one job where I was tech support for NPR and since people do not have problems all the time, but they do come up when we didn''t have calls to take we were encouraged to surf the net. They called it executive surf time. It was really cool. We were not allowed to play games though because they thought that we might not take a call if we were in the middle of a game.

I obviously have tons of free time here because I am on PS all day. Today is my last day here and I do not know what my computer access will be like where I am going. I may go through PS withdrawl!

I work on a crisis line, so that''s not an option nope

Years ago I worked in factories, one was a packing house, the other I assembled hats. If there was no work, we went home. If our specific departments ran out of orders, we''d be shifted to other departments to help first, and if they were low on orders, out we went. I''ve worked in office settings since 2000, and I''ve always found stuff to do if I was running low. Usually the jobs nobody else wants to do. Or I''d clean and organize things. The job I have now, everybody keeps their specific jobs close to the vest and no cross training, and then it''s usually 1 person swamped and the people caught up, and the swamped person complaining. Really tho, it''s a Dr''s office-there''s ALWAYS stuff to do, if you WANT to do it.

I give my team the option to go home early from time to time when things are slow. It doesn''t happen often, but we always seem to have a lull around the holidays and in the early part of the summer. I know their time is valuable outside of the 9-5, so I feel it''s the most respectful thing to do... why sit here and waste time if you could be home with your kids or working out or doing something more fun???

I''m sorry to all of you that have to thumb-twiddle if there''s no work - I hate that!

They scrounged up some little things for me to do. It''s trying to snow, so I am hoping the day will be short otherwise. I hate just idling.

I''ve been unemployed for 18 months

I wish I did! Unfortunately, with my job, it''s not possible. I''m a first grade teacher.

My assistant was going on a short break this morning, and I begged her to take me with her. Didn''t work.

I definitely have down time at work. My job is very roller coaster like. I''m pulling my hair out one minute and twiddling my thumbs the next.

My employer is weird though, I have to fill out a time sheet, even though I''m salaried. But sometimes I "work from home" for an hour a week and leave early since I run out of things to do but I always end up answering emails and such on the weekends so I feel like I probably still work a full 40 hours.

Honestly my boss is almost never here so I probably could leave when I was done working but I have too much of a conscious to do that... I feel guilty while I''m gone.

slow at work?!
Never for me.... lol

yep, mine comes in waves...today, not much to do! They should really close the office early...

I''ve been paid to internet at work for the past 4 months! ok, that''s not my job, but it''s been so quiet that''s pretty much what I''ve been doing with little bits of work here and there. we were really busy before, but as I''m on a project it also comes in waves. should pick up again in May... anyway, I don''t feel bad because when it was busy at work we had to work late hours and come in on the weekends and weren''t allowed to take leave...

I also found out that 6 people got fired for spending too much time on Facebook and other "unsecure" sites. I''m glad no one has spoken to me yet, now with 4 months of internetting on my record. however, I don''t have Facebook or Twitter, nor do I look at youtube at work, so that''s probably why I haven''t showed up on the radar yet.

:-) yeah, PS tends to fly under the radar
