I won this baby on Ebay just a few minutes ago as a xmas prezzie to myself. Here is link.

If that doesn''t work, hopefully the attached pic will.

I realise it''ll be a tad dark but I was looking for a rich regal stone and I adore asschers so couldn''t resist!

If it has total extinction and is really truely dead I''ll return it but the video showed lovely bright claret flashes!

What do you think???

Don''t want to rain on your parade, but those tweezers are exceptionally bright, so the stone may indeed be very dark. But hey, you won''t know until it arrives.

Light bright tweezers are indicative of a very, very bright light shining on the stone.

Hmmm... excellent point.

Wish I'd noticed that before!

Site had 100% rating and video seemed ok but guess that could be altered too!?

Oh well, I'll let you know when it arrives.....

Oh wow, yeah thats going to no doubt be really dark in person. what type of stone is it (the linky didn''t work)

Darn it! There was a lighter more purple one too but I liked the red tones of this one better. Ugh! Just have to see what it's like then IRL....

It's a rhodolite garnet (spelling?).

The one thing I''ve learned about rhodies is to go as light as you can stand. Those deep dark colors don''t always express themselves well when you want to set the stone.

Rhodies are amazingly beautiful stones when they''re cut correctly. I have one (its small 5mm) that I set and I love it to death...it was a pretty bright stone to begin with but more pinkish purple. When I purchased it, the color was dead on correct. However, setting it made the color shift closer to a medium purple.

These days I have a bit of a love hate relationship with it because though I can still see it, I hate that I can''t see it in every light. But when I can, its like I''m in love all over again!

Its the ring I''m contemplating resetting since I may never get that much use out of the ring if I leave it as is.

All you can do is see what it looks like when you get it, but just a hunch from the pictures it may look quite dark in person.

I just won a red spinel too, expecting it to be dark, check out the 'Light bright tweezers' (Gailey's quote). Let's share some photo when they arrived!!

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s not going to be a dark stone although I don’t have high hopes for that.

Good points everyone about the photos. I am advising dealers that I sell to that it''s a good idea to include gem tweezers in their photos so customers can judge the exposure level. It''s an excellent reference point.

HP -- It will be too dark for me. But you want a darker stone so I hope it works for you!!

Chic -- The cutting looks nice! Hope you love it when you see it.

I ditto this, and I''m suspecting a very dark stone as well.

A little off topic - HP, did you ever post pics of your Doug Asscher? I don''t remember seeing it after you received it . . .

Well I am going to keep my fingers crossed as there is no need to burst your bubble. That said, I will pay attention to the tweezers more the next time I am "considering" an Ebay stone. I hope your beyond surprised when you receive it!!

BTW, I may have missed this in the responses to this thread, but is that a garnet?

Hello all,

Happy New Year! We moved over the Christmas period so sorry it''s been so long since I''ve posted. The garnet finally arrived! It seem to get lost for a while but did eventually make it.

Amazingly it''s not all doom and gloom!

It''s quite a saturated colour and has minimal extinction. Very pretty in indirect sunlight. Sort of colour of fortified wine, like sherry. Perhaps more apricot colour than the photo shows but very pretty. Nice size and cut too. Very crisp edges and steps.

Although I wouldn''t recommend that seller, I''m pleased it wasn''t a complete waste of money. I would like to set it one day, perhaps with Peridot sides as a colourful cocktail ring...

Glad you like the stone and it wasn''t a bust!
