Cleo, for what it's worth, my e-ring has 18k yellow gold prongs, I've worn it every day for almost four years, and I've never had a problem! If 18k YG is what you want, I say go for it!

ETA: You can see my e-ring in my avatar. As you can see, it's a three-stone ring and there are only four prongs on each stone. Again, I've never had a problem with it, and neither does my insurance agent!

I'm with you Irishgrrrl - my 3 stone is WG, but much of a muchness to YG. I have had it for over 3 yrs, and neary a scratch in sight.
I had one of the prongs re tipped for the first time since purchase a couple months ago, and thats been it as far as maintenance/repairs.
I'm sorry, I just don't agree with the platinum is invariably better mantra..

Arjunajane, I agree with this completely! This is especially true for people with sensitive skin. Platinum and white gold both often use nickel as an alloy, and some people (including myself) are very allergic to nickel . . . your skin breaks out in an itchy, sore rash and it becomes hard (if not impossible) to wear your rings!

From what I understand, yellow gold also sometimes uses nickel as an alloy, but not nearly the amounts found in white gold and platinum. Also, I have never had a problem with any of my diamonds looking yellower than their true color grades due to being set in yellow gold. And, in fact, ALL of my diamonds are set with yellow gold prongs . . . and there are many!!!

I don''t think yellow gold will make a diamond look yellow, sometimes it is recommended to mask the yellow tint in a lower color diamond and help it appear whiter. Yellow gold is very rich-looking, I love the butteriness of it and can see that someone would want it just because it looks so rich. But, the higher carat gold is softer, and white gold is not as soft as yellow gold. I think people are just pointing out that this could be the reason she''s having trouble finding the setting she desires. I once had a large pearl set in 14k yellow gold, and the prongs would always loosen to the point that the pearl would actually spin around! A jeweler told me it was because the prongs were yellow gold and not white or platinum. That''s all, no one is saying she can''t have it done, in fact it sounds as if others on PS are quite happy with yellow gold prongs. Her description of what she wants sounds lovely and she should have it! It''s easy and quick to check how secure the stone is every day or at least once a week, if she does this she should be fine -- hold the ring up to your ear and shake, listening for rattling. Then touch the table of the diamond with a pencil eraser and see if the diamond moves. Finally, visually inspect the ring from all angles, looking for bent or misaligned prongs. (Of course, take it to the jeweler for regular checkups).

I hope you want an 18kt white mount. If you put an F color stone in a yellow gold mount you might as well have a K color stone because the stone will take up the color of the mount. Why does the mount have to be 18kt? Put it in 14kt white, why not? And why four prong? Six prong is much safer because, if you lose one prong, nothing happens, with four, if you lose one, the stone can fall out. Also, six prongs are smaller than four prongs and will show less.
Where to start?

I'm sorry but this is one of the most absurd statements I have heard! Have you actually seen a well cut colourless stone in a yg mount? I have a D colour ACA in a ygold setting and it looks nothing but ICY WHITE.

The mount has to be yg as Cleo loves ygold, end of story.

It has to have four prongs as Cleo loves the look of four prongs, not 6.

A well made 4 prong setting will be fine, I am sure Cleo is diligent about getting her prongs checked, and in the event that a prong should come loose, I am sure Cleo has an excellent insurance policy.

Hope that clears it up for you.

DITTO Honey. I think this is also one of the most narrow minded things I have read on here.
As you can prolly tell, it really cheesed me off but I tried to keep my cool.
I should've just said what I really thought too - out-there and just plain Wrong.

Anyways, pls excuse my rant.

I also would love to hear an update from Cleo!
I too would like to hear from Cleo, as I can totally sympathize with her feeling of being cursed - read one of my recent threads. I also am taking an interest in YG solitaires!!

Plus I always thought her ring was pretty in her avatar. And having just been thru getting a new head for my YG solitaire, and hearing the 4- vs 6-prong debate and plat. vs. WG head debate, I am with Arjunajane & others - Cleo should get what she wants. 4-prong is just fine, gold is fine, etc etc. I went with a 4-prong WG head. I am so glad to finally have 4-prongs, and like others said, if it's insured, what's the problem? I too just don't agree with the platinum is invariably better mantra..
