Yet another "is this a good deal" query...

Hi all -- I have been "learning" a lot about diamonds lately (this site is amazing -- you guys know so much!!) and am finally breaking "lurker" status to ask a question.

Long story short, I am replacing a 1.49 ct round ideal (VS1, I color) that chipped & was given back (heart-breakingly) to the insurance company. My engagement stone, and I chipped it .

SO...We have insurance $$ in hand and have the option to buy this stone, and of course I would like some assurance that what we''re getting is in fact a great deal. It''s a gorgeous stone and we can get it for $12k -- setting included.

Here are my details:
Round brilliant cut/certified EGL ideal
2.01 ct
F color
SI2 (not 100% eye clean from pavilion view -- 1 inclusion, but it faces up lovely)
girdle: Med. to Sl. Thick facted (1.5% - 2.8%)
fluorescence -- none
symmetry & polish -- both very good
no culet

measurement: 8.16 - 8.07 x 5.00 mm
table: 57%
depth: 61.7%
table angle: 32.1 degrees
pavilion angle: 41.3 degrees

HCA evaluator says: 2.2 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right

Is that enough info to tell me if we grab the stone and run, or just plain run??

Firstly, sorry about your original diamond.

Which division of EGL graded this new one? There are branches such as EGL USA, Antwerp, Israel amongst others, so as some feel the grading varies, it would be good to know which it is. EGL generally carry a lower pricetag than GIA and AGS, so that is something to consider.

I take it from your post that you have actually seen this diamond? Have you been able to compare it to any others? The cut could be tighter, but if it is the case you have seen it and love it for the extra size too, then it may be worth considering, it depends on what matters to you at the end of it - increased size with a diamond you have seen and love, or a tighter cut with a GIA/ AGS report either smaller, or for more money. I think a good thing would be to invest a little more money and make the sale final on this diamond checking out with an independant appraiser. Also does the vendor have a return policy and or a trade up policy? Personally I think getting a good deal is subjective, you can use the Pricescope your diamond tool above to compare prices of similar size and spec EGL graded diamonds - what is a good deal for one person may not be for another, so in the end, especially with a luxury high ticket item like a diamond, you have to feel that from an economic sense - your money has been wisely invested to bring you the enjoyment and pleasure you seek from owning a diamond. If this one is it then great - but for checking out pricing, the above tool is your best bet.

Believe me, I've run it through every price comaprison I have been able to on the entire internet! Using the Pricescope tool, similar stones (GIA certs) come in between $15-$18k, so I'm feeling good about that.

I have seen it (fondled, groped and drooled, is more the case), and compared it to other "cleaner" (yet smaller) diamonds, and it definitely gives them a run for their money. It's a firecracker, for sure. It's a nice upgrade for the cash we'd outlay (or NOT outlay, actually...it would be even dollars for the insurance check).

So stressful!

LOL!!! That tells me then that this diamond is definitely worth serious consideration! It sounds like you have really done your homework, it has an EGL USA report which some feel is the premier EGL lab, so it is a strong contender obviously for you! It comes down to your eyes and heart whether you feel this is the diamond for you!
