Yehuda Claim: We sell for less than Blue Nile!

I find it interesting that all of the comparisons listed on the Yehuda web site today are for diamonds supposedly listed on the Blue Nile web site, I say supposedly because as you can see from the screen capture from the Yehuda web site that appears below, they fail to provide specific reference numbers for inventory items, neither theirs nor Blue Niles, as a basis of proof of the comparison. I also find it interesting that the price range suggested for the diamonds claimed to be used as a comparison on the Blue Nile web site are stated in terms of a range of price, rather than any one specific item - that''s kind of like saying Ketchup at Brand X Grocers costs between $2.00 - $6.00 but ours is only $1.25, this is an advertising concept that I''m sure the Federal Trade Commission would have a field day with.

I wanted to know a little more about the "ideal cut" diamond that Yehuda is basing their price comparison on, so I conducted a search for a 0.59 carat, H color, SI-1 clarity, round "ideal cut" diamond selling for $1,075.00 and I found this one, which I assume to be the diamond used in the comparison since it is selling for $1,075.00 and Yehuda failed to reference any specific inventory item on their comparative listing.

My concern is that people who don''t understand the terminology will buy into their marketing. It''s like, "oh look, high colour and clarity going for so much less, so, why not?"

This is the lab report posted on the Yehuda diamond web site for the 0.59 carat, H color, SI-1 clarity round brilliant cut diamond which they advertise on the listing as being "ideal cut". Note that the polish rating for the diamond is EGL Good and the symmetry rating for the diamond is EGL Very Good. The total depth of the diamond is listed at 63.8% combined with a table diameter of 56%, however the Crown Height and Pavilion Depth measurements are listed at 0% which means that they are non-existent? Clearly this has to be an error because otherwise this diamond has a really thick girdle edge because the total depth of the diamond is stated as being 63.8% but the EGL states that the diamond has a thin, faceted girdle. Apparently the diamond has been inscribed as being "Tolkowsky Cut" but I''m pretty familiar with Tolkowsky''s diamond design, and I think good old Marcel Tolkowsky was rather fond of a crown angle of 34.5 degrees combined with a pavilion angle of 40.75 degrees and this diamond doesn''t have a crown or a pavilion? Obviously I''m being sarcastic, but the use of the term "Ideal Cut" within the scope of this advertisement just seems to be a further abuse of consumer trust.

Let''s take a shot at this, I am growing crankier and crankier with Yahuda on this one.

So if we get a nice one carat with a 63.8 depth it is going to have a much smaller spread than a stone cut to an AGS 0 or a GIA Ex.

Want to see something really bad, let''s take a look at the ASET photo of this hypothetical EGL Europe "ideal". See a little leakage?? See the wonderful spread of 6.25cts for which you are paying a full one carat price?

I think perhaps this is part of the confusion caused by the very word Ideal and the fact that it is often used to describe stones that should not so be described.

Viva la Performance Grading! Numerical proportion spreads are not working, at least not with this "gem"

Tee-Hee, I can''t let Wink have all the fun in DiamCalc with this diamond... Okay, so I realize that the Crown Height and Pavilion Depth measurement of 0% isn''t possible - it has to be an error of some sort, but if the diamond were actually cut with a 0% Crown Height and a 0% Pavilion Depth, well this is the closest I could get to those measurements in DiamCalc because the program knows that this combination isn''t possible, so I set it to the lowest measurement allowed and this is how such diamond might look as viewed through an ASET and a Firescope

I supposed that every consumer have the right to choose. But Yehuda shouldn''t have advertised their products at other companies'' expense. Perhaps they should compare their price to any other (if any) companies that specialised in clarity-enhanced diamond as they do. Otherwise, it is just misleading to users.
