OK I''m coming out of lurkdom and hoping you''ll be able to help me with some shopping advice. My birthday was yesterday, and wonderful DH gave the go ahead to pick out my first pair of diamond studs, which we''d been thinking about for a while.

Our budget''s kinda tight - $1,000-$1200. I''ve done lots of research on the great earing threads here (esp Diamondseeker''s "Show me your diamond studs!") which has been very helpful. I think I''m looking at a range of .5 to .7 total cwt for the set with our budget. My lobes are not the daintiest

so I''d like to sacrifice color, clarity etc to get the biggest we can afford - I''d be fine with K or L color and SI2-I1 clarity since these are so tiny - but those colors/clarities don''t even seem to common.

Oh, and I DEFINITELY want these to be upgradeable!!

So, I''ve been looking at WF''s ES diamonds, but their inventory in my size range seems kind of limited - do they typically list everything they have in stock? And how do you go about getting th PS discount if you contact them directly - just mention, "Hey, I''m with Pricescope

" lol!

Also, for those of you that have upgraded WF studs - do you send the settings back and have new diamonds re-set into them? Do you keep the old, empty settings? I''ll be calling them in the next day or so also, but just thought you might have some collective experience.

I''m also looking at GOG''s uncerted H&A pre-set earrings that are upgradeable. Does anyone here have those particular pre-set studs? They come in ranges of color/clarity brackets, with set prices. I just wonder about upgrading - some of the price brackets are $450 (to jump to the next "level") but GOG''s upgrade policy is $500+ might cause complications if I wanted to "work my way up".

OK sorry to be so long winded - I''m just so excited to be joining the ranks of diamond hunters again after a 5 year hiatus :) Thanks for taking time to read this!

Congratulations on your birthday!! A woman shouldn''t have to be without a pair of studs. Most jewelers have an upgrade program, so you shouldn''t need to worry about that. Because your budget is a little tight, I would suggest 1/2ct total weight. That way you don''t sacrifice quality. My first suggestion would be to get them in a martini setting. This setting makes the diamonds look larger than they already are. Most diamond studs are Si clarity, because they don''t need to be the best clarity for the ears. Good luck.
