Has anyone ever seen an emerald cut diamond in an x-prong mounting? I found one on Solomon Brothers website (they are based in Atlanta). I am thinking about remounting my EC stone in this type of mounting with the stone set east to west. The rep from Solomon Brothers told me Vatche could make the x-prongs to custom fit my stone.
I''ve seen an x-prong mounting for an emerald and I totally LOVE it! The length of an emerald allows a steeper tapering in the band. Let''s compare a 1 carat princess (5.5x5.5mm) vs 1 carat emerald (7x5mm) for example: with the emerald, I can have the shank tapering from 7mm (right next to the basket) to 2.5mm (at the base of the shank), as opposed to a tapering from 5.5mm - 2.3mm with the princess. It''s a matter of whether you like that look of a steeper tapering. I personally love the tapering but don''t dig the step cut of an emerald.
Opps! Just realised that you want your stone set east-west. IMO, the east-west setting will make the "X" part of the x-prong too wide and flat, which won't look very appealing. Otherwise, I reckon you'll have to set your stone really high to balance it out. I've photoshopped an example. I think setting it north-south will help bring out the look of the x-prong better. However, IF your stone is not very large (maybe below 6mm in length), setting it EW might not cause such a problem. There won't be much room along the width to allow the ring shank to taper though.
Thanks for your input. I see your point about the flat/wide issue if my stone is set east to west. I am not set on that but just wanted to throw out the idea for discussion. My stone is small and measuring 6mm x 4mm (it is .55 cw). If I go with the x-prong setting, I would set the stone going north to south. If I do not go with the x-prong setting and choose a four prong basket setting, I am considering setting it east to west for a different look. Since my stone is an E color, VS1 clarity, it is a really pretty white stone and I would like to have it in a setting that will maximize the beauty of it.
Oh definitely do an East/West set of your E-ring. It will look fabulous. I would go with Vatche, they will adjust settings to your stone and they have a good reputation for quality on here. The Vatche Royal X-prong has a very flattering taper.
If you are getting platinum though... I would give Leon Mage a call though and see what he can do in an X-prong East West for you. This plain pieces, from all reports, are pretty reasonable. And I would think that his version would be the most flattering of all.
For non-pave work, I''d recommend Mark Morell, especially since he has done one in an EW stone from GOG which I posted a picture of in your other design thread. He is a GOD with platinum: he makes the ring look like molten metal.
Oh, I just remembered that Mark does not accept stones from regular folks like you and me, but from appraisers and diamond vendors. Hmmm, I dunno. Maybe give Mark a call and ask?
That''s not true. Mark accepts commisions -- WELL THOUGHT OUT ONES-- from people. You just have to check on his website to see when he is accepting new commisions. But his custom rings seem to start above 2500.
