Tooooootally hypothetical (yeah right, haha)...

Say the following applies to you:
1. your diamond *looks* like a warmer color than the GIA report claims it is,
2. your diamond is a "good" polish, "good" symmetry,
3. your diamond is the perfect-looking size to you on your hand at 1.33c (haha, just imagine!),
3. your diamond is YOUR DIAMOND and cannot be replaced...

How much would you be willing to lose from the carat weight to possibly have it recut to perhaps make it look less "warm?" Is that even possible?

Unless you would be planning on recutting to an ideal RB (which is probably not possible and would be dumb b/c you''d likely lose a lot of carat weight) then I wouldn''t bother. I don''t think it would help much personally...but I''m not an expert. Plus there is always a risk of breaking or chipping.

Alli do yu have a radiant? Cause I''m not sure there is gonna be much anyone can do.. radiants generally trap color much more than rounds can.

d''oh! dumb question obviously! thanks for answering, NF and Gypsy!!

I have a round-cornered rectangular modified brilliant (which has the same facet pattern as a radiant)...I wish I had been involved in the choice, because now, a year later, as much as I love my ring because FI gave it to me, the warmth has really started to irk me. I''m probably going to get the ring appraised because the jewelry store that sold it to him claims it''s an H (and the GIA says it''s an H), but everytime I bring it anywhere and compare it to other Hs, it looks a LOT yellower. Maybe it''s because of the shape, maybe it''s because of the setting, maybe it''s because it''s not really an H

Guess I won''t know until I bring it to a neutral appraiser (is there such a thing?)...

I have to probably just get over it. No way are FI and I in a financial position to be thinking about doing anything drastic with the stone or the setting...

Thanks again, ladies!!

radiant will show color more than any other shape.

Yeah ... they are right that the reason your stone looks more warm than other GIA "H"s is because the radiant pattern is designed to bring OUT the color inside the stone. To HIGHLIGHT it. Not disguise it.

I can''t think of a way to change it too much unless you send it to be cut into a square hearts & arrows ... the cutter would have to determine if that''s even possible based on the stone''s dimensions etc. Might involve a lot of lost weight. (Even so much that your existing setting would no longer work).

GAH! Wish I could think of something else ... sorry!

Here is a true story that just happened. I am waiting for the diamond to arrive, it is on its way back from Antwerp.

Stone started life as a beautiful diamond of 1.48cts. I-I1, ideal cut. Frosted girdle and surface reaching inclusions near edge of stone (feathers).

Diamond was chipped by owner.

While in Antwerp it took a little bath, in acid, which removed the stain from the feather that was imparting color to the diamond, up one color grade.

While being recut, it received a polished girdle rather than a bruted girdle (kind of a rough stone ground look that is not used much anymore), up one color grade.

Stone was sent to AGS after above, and is now coming back as a G-I1. We estimated the repaired weight at about 1.15 to 1.27cts, and this time we were unusually locky and the diamond came back as a 1.27.

So, long story short. Cutting can have a tremendous affect on both the look of the diamond and the color grade of the diamond, although it is not very often that you will go up two actual color grades. Most often you will get a diamond that retains its current color grade, but it will LOOK like it has improved one to two grades.

That is because in a medium to poorly cut diamond the light may go round and round for a relatively long time before returning to the eye (if at all) and this allows the light time to absorb more of the tint of the diamond. In a really well cut diamond the light will reflect as few as two times withing the diamond before returning to the eye, which does not allow a lot of time to absorb the body color of the diamond, and this will result in the diamond looking more colorless than it appears when it is not well cut.

Well, what I said about rounds above is true, I am not a radiant expert and what I said probably does not apply. I did not read down far enough to catch that.

I knew I''d get great information from you lovely experts--thank you so much for taking the time to respond!

I didn''t know that, Karl!

deco--I had no idea...thank you so much for your input

you sure know your stuff!!

Wink--soooo, you''re sayin I''ve got a shot? (hehe--10 pts if you guess where I nabbed that quotation)
I mean, I don''t care if it changes the actual color of the diamond in terms of GIA standards; as I said, this is my diamond and I will keep it and love it forever and ever because my sweetheart (who doesn''t care in the least for jewelry of any kind) gave it to me to profess his unending love (haha, think I''m putting words in his mouth here??)...but if there is any chance that a pro here believes that there is a possibility of getting better light into that puppy--I''m in!

aw, just saw your second reply, Wink...thank you so much for your descriptive response--you are all so great here!

(grumbles...wish my dear boy would have consulted with me--and allowed me to consult with y''all before I got my stooooone!)

LOL! I kept trying to figure out how you know she had a radiant, could NOT find it ANYWHERE in the post. Then of course I happened to look at the avatar...

Sigh, a brain is such a sad thing to waste.

I''m sorry honey. Um... how do you feel about putting it in a yellow gold bezel, completely enclosed and having D colored side stones to make it look like a light yellow diamond with white sidestones? I''m sure we can make it yellower for you. Not sure how we can make it whiter... except maybe to open up the basket a lot, let more light into it, and set it a bit higher up. And then put yellow diamonds on the side of it, so that it looks white in contrast. How do you feel about three stone?

haha, I love the way you think Gypsy!

naw, it''s okay...I like my solitaire and I like the way it''s set for now...maybe one day I''ll get a nice big eternity band (my mom has one that I think is about 2ctw--which is nice and substantial on me!) and reset this into a pendant or somethin''...
