Wow! I saw a 3 ct. RB GIA w-x colored diamond!

I couldn''t believe it. I have been wanting to see a low colored stone but never thought I would run across one. I was NOT looking for jewery....just doing errands at the mall

A new store was there and I peered into their display case along the walkway. OMG! There was a RB in a custom halo. It was a very beautiful pale transparent lemony yellow.......I just had to go inside and inquire!

It was in fact, rated w-x vs2 and was 3.15 cts. It had faint fluor. It only rated a ''very good'' cut by GIA, but boy did it have a ton of sparkle and fire! In the store it was blinding and I took it out to the center of the mall to see it in sunlight---------BLINDING!!! It was, of course, overpriced, but it sure has me rethinking what color to get! It definitely makes a larger diamond much more affordable

Has anyone seen this color in a chunky cushion?? That has been my focus lately. I imagine the color would appear somewhat different, as each one probably does anyway, but would the larger facets be as beautiful in a pale yellow? I don''t know if the look would translate with a different cut---KWIM? This is the first ring in my life that really made me swoon!

I don''t think you''ll find too many chunky cushions in W-X. If a cutter has a piece of rough with that much body colour, he will most times cut it as a radiant to maximise face-up colour and go for Fancy Light Yellow. Finding a round in that size and colour is a rare thing!

DBL has quite a few photos of W-X stones, but none are cut in a "chunky" style.

Rainierinspring- actually we have seen many chunky cushions in the faint to light yellow color ranges- and they can look amazing!
It''s true the look is slightly different than a round- some people prefer the cushion in the light yellow to the round....Personally I believe the faint-light yellow cushions are equally as beautiful to a round

Thanks for the input. I did stop at a local B and M and the gemologist there found some RBs in her computer listing in the 2.5 -3.0 ct range. She also thought she could come up with a chunky cushion. I don''t know what her sources are.... the prices were very good for the RBs. I just thought online prices would be even better!

Since the stone that I saw had faint fluor., maybe I would be happy with a slightly higher grade without it?

I still get excited when I think of that ring!

You might have some luck finding an actual antique cushion in that color range, or an OEC/OMC if you were open to that. While it''s a bit more common to see the antique stones in the K/L/M/N range, there are definitely some lower "cape" colors out there. Old World Diamonds or Jewels by Erica Grace might be worth checking out.

Thanks littlegreykitten. I thought of that, but wouldn''t it be very difficult to find one with great cut quality? I want the most brilliance/fire I can get with whatever cut I decide on.

Antique cut stones pretty much have to be judged on an individual basis; some are beautifully cut, and a lot are dogs, and like fancy cuts, the numbers don''t tell you a whole lot. That being said, when I shop for an OEC online, I do use the numbers somewhat. (Which means there are probably a good number of beautiful OECs that get written off out of hand, but you have to narrow the field down *somehow*). I look for a smallish table- mid 50% or under... my favorite OEC I own has a 45% table. Depth around 60%-63%. (A high crown, a medium to large culet, and attractive looking facet pattern are other things I look for.) That''s not saying it''s guaranteed to be beautiful if it is in that range; it just tells you that an OEC with stats falling in that range is likelier to be a nice one.

Speaking realllly generally, usually a well-cut antique stone will be balanced more towards fire over brilliance (white light), with chunky facets giving big flashes of fire, but not "pinfire" like, say, a princess cut. It''s very much a matter of taste. I prefer the look of a well cut antique stone- I love fire, and chunky facets.

If you haven''t looked at any antique stones and you think it might be something you would be interested in, definitely see if you can check out some in person; there''s no other way to tell if they''re to your taste or not. If you''re into chunky cushions you might very well love them
