Say you have a round engagement ring (or whatever shape you have). Hypothetically and just for fun-- at least it is for me anythime soon-- what would you rather have?

A-- all of your other jewelry in the same shape to match it

B-- different shapes and sizes to wear with it (maybe princess studs, emerald cut pendant, etc.)

Or C-- get a nice set first (pendant and studs) then start mixing and matching with other shapes, colors (warmer and cooler), and sizes for RHRs, stacking bands, and other pieces.

Factor in all the different metals and colors of gold, colored gemstones to go with them and there are so many choices! I remember having so much fun as a kid going through my grandmothers'' jewelry boxes, and they had mostly avon costume jewelry. It sounds frivolous, but I want to be an old lady with a big box of beautiful jewelry pieces to pass down to my kids and grandkids. So what do your collections look like? Or what will they look like?

I just pick what I like. I do have bezel stud earrings and a pendant that technically "match". And my ering is bezeled but it''s a cushion...guess I just love bezels right now!

I don''t buy things to match on purpose though, I am usually more of a mismatched jewelery wearer.

I agree with this. I had rounds but if I loved a different shape I would buy it (provided I had funds too. hehe). I do have trillion side stones on my ering.

I''m an impulse buyer in the grand scheme of things - not that I buybuybuy!, but more that I don''t tend to wonder if something will "go" with the rest of my collection if I love it. That said, I tend to be pretty consistent in my tastes, not so much in terms of shape or metal, but in terms of general aesthetic. I guess I''d go with choice C out of your options, but the nice basic set isn''t necessarily my first stop on the timeline.
