Hopefully someone can help me with this decision.

Would you purchase this without a certification.
3.03 carat round diamond.
H-I color
SI1
9.05 mm x 5.8 mm
Can not remember what the cut was but the stone looked great.
$21270.00

I compared this stone to a few VS2 and SI1 certified stones. If I was selecting a stone by the naked eye I really could not tell the difference between the certified ones and the non certified 3.03 stone. They all looked good. The salesperson placed the stone in a setting and we looked at it outside in the natural light. All I can say is Wow!!!

The jewler said that he could guarantee that it was a SI1 and color was between G and I. If there was a certification I would not be worried. The jewler said that he could send it out for the certification but it would take a few weeks. I assumed since he said this he must have been confident in what he said the stone was.

How important is it to get a certification for a diamond. I will never sell it. This is for an upgrade to my wifes existing ring.

Would you purchase this stone if it looked great but had no cert.
I did place $1000.00 down just to hold the stone for the week until I finalized my decision.

Thanks for any input.

Rob

I would want a certificate but you can you send it to be appraised by one of the Pricescope appraisers before you commit to purchasing it ??

Dave Atlas and Neil Beatty are great.

Take him up on his offer to send it to GIA. I doubt seriously it will take weeks or no jewelers would ever send stones there. The other option would be to send the stone to an independent diamond appraiser as long as you had a decent return period. But no way on earth would I buy a 3 ct. uncertified stone without doing one or the other. A certified stone would bring more money if it is a good stone, so there is a reason it is not certified!!!

Thanks...I am sure that this has been asked a million times before.
I just wanted to make sure.
The price does seem a little low but the price per ct. was the same as a certified 2.57 H-SI1 stone that I was comparing it to.

I personally wouldn''t buy a diamond of that size and price without a reliable grading report, or an exam by a trusted appraiser. Have you agreed on a price or will that be the same regardless of how the diamond checks out with GIA?

Yes the price will be the same.
Thanks for your input. I will have the jeweler send the diamond for certification.
If the grade comes back the same...H-I, SI1, 3.03 ct then it seems that 21,270 is a very good price.
