i''ve got the diamond itch, and after 10 years, my dh is sick of me talking about it (although he doesn''t like the idea of diamonds, falsly inflated market, overpriced, indulgent he claims...bah),,, anyhoo..

I found these recently and am a bit too giddy to be focused, so some input is appreciated:

1. a local (reputable?) jeweler: an estate, art deco step ering, .48 +/- in platinum; J, SI2 $1499

2. etrader: 1.08 tcw (.98 center); antique platinum setting; G, but: center is flawed with a unique prism effect (flawed, nonetheless) $1000

3. etrader: .43 center; pave stones band; $600 LGL certified I, VS2 white gold

4. etrader: unique hand-crafted set; platinum; .5 center; H, SI $1466

that''s all the info I can offer right now. The specs (measurements) aren''t that big of a deal to me... (don''t fall over)

I think the general response that anyone is going to give on here is that THEY wouldn''t choose them because they would want WAY more information..

I would need to see pictures to determine which one I liked the best based on making a decision without caring about the numbers..

fair enough (and makes sense)

the 1.08 ctw center is as follows: by EGL USA: 6.0-5.93x4.10 mm
gh/i2 1.08 CARAT European Cut Diamond 2 Piece Bridal Set .

mounted in PLATINUM currently size 6

Center Diamond Weight: .92 Carat

center diamond measures 6.00 - 5.93mm x 4.10mm

Color: G - H in the colorless range

Clarity: the Clarity on this ring is almost impossible to truely rate, for this ring has a very special prismatic flaw. this means that is has a viewable flaw in the ring that actually create a prism effect in the diamond. the diamond creates a rainbow inside of itself (as you can see in detail in the photos above) giving the diamond even more sparkle and life. The diamond was rated technically by EGL as I-2 as the flaw is easily seen.

This Diamond is accented on the first band by four baguette diamonds

the second band contains two more Baguttes and Five Round brilliant cut diamonds

the accents and second band have a total weight of .16 of 1 Carat Total Weight with a G-H Color and Clarity of VS1-VS2.

all set in Two platinum bands weighing 7.4 Grams

.62 CARAT total weight .

DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING

with a beautiful I color VS2 .43 round brilliant cut diamond certified by LGL a trusted independent gem lab.....

+ 44 round diamonds weighing .19 total weight

Hi LouLou and welcome!

Sorry, I wouldn't pick any of the diamonds you posted for a multitude of reasons. Also I would be very interested to find out what the experts think about the rainbow flaw inside one of them, the only thing that comes to my mind is that it could be the flash effect from clarity enhancement, but I am only guessing.

If these diamonds are being sold on Ebay, you might want to do a search to read about other's experiences.

it''s okay, i''m here to get some rational thinking injected...can you expand on the whys?

Sure!

Firstly we don't know anything about the seller, who he is, how he operates, if he is on Ebay, if he has a good return policy etc.

The cards you posted with the diamond, to the best of my knowledge aren't a full EGL report of the diamond, just a description. I also haven't heard of the LGL lab. Generally when diamonds are said to be G - H in colour and VS1 - VS2 in clarity for example, then the diamonds don't have a major lab report, just one of those cards mentioned above. So it is possible the diamonds are a lower grade for colour and clarity.

The cut doesn't look good by the proportions posted, also with the prismatic flaw, I haven't heard of such a thing and I would want to know exactly what is causing it, in case of durability issues etc, or unattractive effects in some lights. It is possible it could really ruin the look of the diamond, or not. Also in most instances I2 is not a good clarity, as they have given it an I2 grade, it leads me to believe that this flaw is easily seen, this is also what it says. I wonder still if the diamond is clarity enhanced.

Loulou, if you tell us exactly what you are looking for and an idea of budget, we would gladly help you and find some superbly cut diamonds to show you!

Loulou,
We want you to get the best for your budget; meaning you get what you paid for and not get ripped off. Even without all the proper cut and angle information, we need at the very least magnified pictures of the diamond to be able to tell if it will sparkle or not. A reliable lab will help with the accuracy of colour and clarity grading too, so that you don''t pay a I SI2 price for an inaccurately graded stone that turns out to be K I2.

1. Local (reputable?) jeweler: an estate, art deco step ering, .48 +/- in platinum; J, SI2 $1499
Any cert? Picture?

2. etrader: 1.08 tcw (.98 center); antique platinum setting; G, but: center is flawed with a unique prism effect (flawed, nonetheless) $1000
FLAWED!!! Unique prism effect sounds like the vendor is trying to put a pretty spin to the inclusion. It sounds more like the flaw is visible and reflected several times throughout the stone and is smack dab in the middle of the stone.
Short answer: SKIP IT!

3. etrader: .43 center; pave stones band; $600 LGL certified I, VS2 white gold
I''ve never heard of LGL. This is where I question the accuracy of the cert. Is it really an I or is it K? How true is the VS2? Is it really an SI2? It will also be helpful to have the other information on the cert.

4. etrader: unique hand-crafted set; platinum; .5 center; H, SI $1466
No cert? No pictures? What is the return policy? Any restocking fee?

What is etrader?

What''s your budget? Maybe we can suggest something better for you.

Milton,
FC may have some nice antique and repro jewellery but I HATE their return policy.

Chrono, I agree, but if OP is not interested in specs and willing to buy from etrader (?), perhaps that is not a big concern. FYI, Fay Cullen''s return policy is basically no returns, if that dissuades anyone.

etrader = online seller...

http://www.melsantiquejewelry.com/shipping.php is the website for the handcrafted 1930s piece. She allows purchase with right to return upon inspection.

This is what I received when I asked for appraisal/specs:

"No, I don''t have an appraisal for any of my jewelry as they have no value except to a dealer. There is no organized body to regulate appraisals so they can say anything. We have been in business for 35 years can are more of an authority that most. Perhaps you want to read my eBay feedback.

The only authority that can be trusted for diamond certificates is GIA. To get a certificate for the center diamond, you who have to unmount it, send it to GIA and then reset the diamond. The entire process will cost a few hundred dollars. I''m not even sure if GIA certifies diamonds this small - they have a minimum size. They do not appraise jewelry items at all. That''s what antique jewelry dealers are like me are for. "

I appreicate the input and feedback/advice. My range is paltry: $1200-$1500, which is why this set is so appealing (band and ering, perfect).

ps - dealer has had two negatives in the past 8 years with over 1500 transactions...
