Would you exchange it for a bigger size

I received my ring today! It is a brilliant stone and I don't want to sound off-putting, but it is a bit smaller than I had imagined.

I now have a chance to exchange it for a stone that is about 0.5 carat bigger but in SI1 for almost the same price. The bigger stone has a really excellent cut as well but there is a black carbon spot on the table... it's about 0.6mm. Other than that, it's a decent SI1. The size jump is from 1.7ct to 2.17ct, same color.

Would you exchange it for the bigger stone?

The inclusion is about 0.5mm black needle near the edge of the table:

That's a pretty sweet jump in size! but... would that black inclusion drive you nuts, knowing *YOU* know where it is? Would you spend every second staring at it and not enjoying the extra size?

I'd sure be tempted to go for a larger stone (hey, DSS is a medically recognized affliction.... isn't it?? ;)) ) but if its one of those things that's always going to bug you and its all you would focus on every time you looked at your diamond, then its not "mind clean" enough to be worth the jump.

I'd go up in size. That's a good jump.

Are you able to order the second stone without returning your stone first? I think that I would want to be able to view them side by side to be sure of what I wanted to do.

I could easily live with that speck, if it's the little think on the 3:00 arrow.

What is the size jump in MM?

I'd jump

It's the black needle near the 9 o'clock dial.

The size jump would be from 7.62*7.66*4.75 to 8.23*8.26*5.13

That's a sizeable jump. If you think you can live with that specific inclusion, I say go for it.

Wow ! As others have mentioned, its a very nice jump in size. If the inclusion doesn't bother you then go right ahead !

I'd go up in size but only if the inclusion is eye clean. If it is, I wouldn't hesitate and go for the bigger stone.

I guess I am the lone dissenter but the black needle would bother me big time. I know I would look at it constantly. What matters is what you think. I think a 7.6mm ER stone is a nice size.

Skip the stone with the needle. Once you see an inclusion, you will never be able to un-see it. You don't want to be bothered by the inclusion for life.

Given the same ideal/excellent cut and color, I would choose the bigger diamond. Reason is that the size difference in this case is much more noticeable than that the tiny splinter. How "eye-clean" is the inclusion? If the inclusion is "eye-clean" 10 inches or more away, only you will know it is there.

Still, you need to ask yourself if the tiny black needle would bother you.

I could not live with that inclusion. But that is me.

I would so upgrade it the bigger stone! Im all for the biggest you can possibly get and i would sacrifice perfect clarity for it... I probably wouldn't be able to see that mark but if it'll annoy you i wouldn't do it. But if it doesn't annoy you go for it!!

I would as long as it's eye clean.

I would go with the bigger stone for sure! The inclusion would not bother me.

I would go for it! My diamond has an inclusion like that and it doesn't bother me one bit because the size makes me so happy.

I'm thinking that stone would be eye clean for me. At 47, my eyes aren't as sharp as they once were and I doubt I could see that little inclusion. If you can't see it, or if seeing it would be worth the difference in size, then I'd say go for the bigger stone.

If you can't see it, I would go for bigger stone. Agree w person who suggested comparing the two side by side if you can

Nope, you're not alone - it would bother me too. Personally, I'd keep the smaller stone.

Jump, jump, jump!!!
I say go for it! Its a nice size jump, and you are not happy with the stone you have. Unless the spot is right smack on the table, I would say yes!!
I kinda like a spot I can find so I know it's my stone, if its ever been away from me. My pear has a small carbon spot I can find if I twist my hand only in a certain way.
What does the vendor say about the spot to the naked eye? Visible at 6" 12" ?

Is that the ONLY stone you can exchange it for?

Yup I would exchange and do the size jump. The spec wouldn't bother me especially if it could be hidden underneath a prong. Even then I probably wouldn't care very much.

Yup, I would do it. I bet that stone is a great value and I highly doubt anyone will notice anything other than what a gorgeous stone it is.

Can you see the inclusion with the naked eye? If so, I say pass on the stone switch. If you can't see it, and knowing that it's there won't bother you (mind clean) then switch.

IMO, there are all kinds of SI1 stones. Some have very visible inclusions, some have inclusions that are invisible to the eye. And no one but a jeweler is going to be louping your stone. :)

If you can't see it, I'd go for bigger size.

My question would be, is this your forever diamond/engagement ring?

I ask because I'm too sentimental to ever do anything (upgrade/reset) my actual engagement stone, unless something were to happen to the ring. If you plan on upgrading your stone down the road, I would probably go with the bigger stone.

When I was purchasing the diamond for my RHR, it was between a .83 with very good stats for color/clarity (don't remember them exactly) and a 1.2 I I1. Since this is my "play ring," I went with the larger. The inclusion in my I1 is definitely more noticeable than I imagine that needle is... I don't mind it and nobody has ever looked close enough to see it. I might do a clarity upgrade someday. But I went with VS1 in my engagement stone because I wanted it to be eye/mind clean.

A black needle on the table of that size stone would bother me, personally, but I pull my ring up to my eyes pretty darn often - and I don't think with that location you will be able to prong it.

It sounds like you are definitely unhappy with your current stone; perhaps return it and ask the larger stone be sent to you loose - then you can examine it in person and see if the needle is noticeable to you and, if so, whether the size trumps the inclusion in this case. If you are not pleased with the larger stone and return it, are you able to get a full refund or will you be required to stick with this same vendor?
